E. P. ESTES. PENCIL SHABPENBR.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 4, 1912.

wi bnemo UNITE STATES rn'r PENCIL-SHARPENER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 4, 1912. Serial No. 718,475. 7
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER F. Es'ms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved pencil sharpener consisting essentially of a cutting element having a cutting edge set angularly to the plane of a base which forms a guide and support for the pencil, thus enabling the pencil to be manipulated so as to cause the cutter to make slicing cuts on the end of the pencil to point or sharpen the latter and to sharpen the pencil to any desired form either with a long or a short taper as may be required and with the projecting lead point as long or short as may be desired, the invention also including an abrasive surface on the said base and with reference to which the cutter is angularly disposed, as hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved pencil sharpener and pointer which is extremely cheap and simple.
Another object is to provide an improved device of this character which may be used in connection with a desk, a desk drawer, a drawing board, copy book holder, history paper holder, a ruler, or any other desired device as a support for the sharpener, to enable the sharpener to be conveniently employed and to also prevent the sharpener from being lost or mislaid.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of a pencil sharpener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing another form of my improved pencil sharpener.
I would have it understood that although I have here shown only two forms or modifications of my improved pencil sharpener, the same may, within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims be embodied in other modifications.
For the purposes of this specification, I show in Fig. l a rectangular base 1 on which is mounted a cutting blade 2 which is inclined at an angle of about forty-five degrees with reference to the plane of the base and the lower end of which is bent outwardly as at 3 and secured as by means of a screw 4: on the base. A brace 5 is shown in this form of the invention, the said brace being also inclined angularly with respect to the base having its upper end secured to the upper end of the blade, as at 6, and having its lower end bent to bear directly on the base as at7 and secured thereto by means of a screw or other suitable device 8. The cutting edge 9 of the blade or cutter is presented toward the base and is set angularly with respect thereto, as shown.
The base forms a guide and support for the pencil to be sharpened and enables the pencil to be arranged in the angle between the edge of the cutter and the supporting surface of the base and to be manipulated and drawn longitudinally and arranged at such angles or angle with respect to the cutter as to cause the latter to make slicing cuts on the end of the pencil so as to sharpen the pencil as may be desired and to also sharpen the point.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of an abrasive surface on that side of the base which is at an angle to the cutter. This abrasive surface is, in Fig. 1, shown as produced by a file plate or blade 10 which is secured on the base. This abrasive surface may be used to smooth and sharpen the end of the pencil and also for pointing the lead. In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 2, in which the base is indicated at 11 and the abrasive surface at 12, the blade 13 is formed integrally with the brace 14:, the blade and brace being arranged at an angle to each other and bent oppositely from a single strip of sheet metal, the ends of the strip being oppositely turned as at 15-16 and secured by screws on the base. The members 13-14: may both be sharpenedto provide the cutting edges arranged angularly with respect to the upper surface of the base so that each of the said members not only forms a cutter but also forms a brace for the other cutter or only one of the said members may be provided with a cutting edge and the other being employed simply as a brace, as may be desired.
I claim 1. A pencil sharpener comprising a base forming a guide, and a cutter arranged 1ongitudinally of and in a plane at right angles to the base, the cutter being inclined, converging in one direction to the base and having the cutting edge on the side opposed to the base.
2. A pencil sharpener comprising a base forming a guide, and a cutter arranged lon- Patented Got. 28, 1913.
