APPLICATION FILED AUG. 12, 1912.

WITNESSES INVENTOR Z .7?WaZ0/le/" M I l I Af'roRNE vs LOUIS P. WALCHER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
SGARF-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 12, 1912. Serial No. 714,601.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS P. WALoHnR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarf-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to scarf pins, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish a scarf pin with an ornamental attachment that will prevent the pin from becoming accidentally displaced relatively to a scarf or piece of material in which it is mounted.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pin attachment that is made of bendable material capable of being shaped to form a character representing the initial of one of the names of the owner of the pin or otherwise shaped to provide an ornamenta tion.
A further object of this invention is to provide a scarf pin attachment that is simple in construction, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a scarf pin provided with the attachment. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of a modified form of the attachment applied to a portion of a pin, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
An attachment in accordance with this invention is made of a piece of wire shaped to provide a loop 1 having an off-set end 2 whereby said loop can be threaded or placed in an eye or opening 3 in the pointed end of a pin 4. The opposite end of the loop 1 can be bent upon a compound curve to provide a handle or crank 5 that facilitates placing the loop 1 in the opening 3 of the pin. The eX- treme end of the handle or crank terminates in a small knob 6, and in some instances the handle or crank can be shaped and curved whereby it will cooperate with the remainder of the attachment in representing a character or ornamentation.
After the scarf pin has been placed in a scarf or other piece of material, the attachment can be easily and quickly placed in position to prevent the scarf pin from becoming accidentally displaced or stolen, and with the attachment made of wire and finished to harmonize with the pin 4:, said attachment presents a neat appearance and does not detract from the general appearance of the scarf pin.
IVha-t I claim is The combination with a scarf pin having the pointed end thereof provided with an opening, of a guard formed from a single piece of wire and including a body portion having one end provided with a handle and its other end bent to form a circular split loop, one half of said loop being offset and extended through said opening and the other half of said loop positioned against the periphery of the shank of the pin, the free terminus of said offset portion abutting against the shank of the pin.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS P. l/VALCHER.
