RIDING BGOT AND LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 152, 1.912.
Patented Uet. 28, 1913. Serial No. 736,407.
b all whom 'it may concern .Re it known that l, NATHAN C. Si-iivnnick, a citizen oi" the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Riding Boots and Leggings, of which the following is a. specication.
My invention relates to leg-coverings such as are provided by boots and leggings, and especially to articles of this class designed :tor use in horseback riding.
It is the object of my invention to provide in an article of this kind a comparatively stift and smooth-surfaced covering for that portion oit the leg between the knee and ankle, the same having a soft and pliable portion adjoining the inner side of the calf' oi the leg, or the part of the leg which is held against the side of a horse in riding.
Structures embodying my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View of the right or inner side of a boot for the left foot and leg, Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section on the plane of the line of FiO'. l, and Fig. 3 is a similar View showing a modified construction oi' the article.
Among those engaged in sports or occu- Y pations that require horseback riding, legcoverings, such as boots and leggings, are usually considered as of two general classes, each of which has certain advantages for the rider. In the one class the leg-covering is of comparatively stiff material and this has the advantage of preserving its forni and appearance, not wrinkling down around the ankle so as to canse discomfort to the wearer and present an unsightly appearance. In the other class the leg-covering is of soft or pliable material and has the advantage of enabling the rider to feel the side of the horse, and to get a better and more natural cling or grip upon the sides of the animal, thus giving the rider a feeling of security and freedom which greatly increases the ease of riding. By my invention the advantages ci both the above classes of leg-coverings are combined in a single article.
In the boot illustrated in the drawings the oot-portion l is of ordinary construction and materials, and the main part of the leg-portion thereof may be ol the same construction as is ordinarily used for stili"- topped ridingboots. rThe outer part 2 oct said leg-portion of the boot is usually and preferably made of a continuous piece of pliable finished leather of which the edges are oined at the back, an external stay being sewed over the joined edges. In the structure shown in Fig. 2 there is a lining piece ll et relatively stili' leather which is cemented to the external layer 2, and of which the edges are joined at a position co incident with the juncture oi" the edges oi' the outer portion. This stiil lining-piece is cut away throughout an area substantially as shown by the shaded part A of which the front and lower margins are indicated by a dotted line in Fig. 1. VVhe-re the stiff liningpiece is cut away a piece 5 ol sott leather is substituted therefor, so that said portion of the boottop is sollt and pliable, as distinguished from the remaining relatively stiii portion.
In the inodilied structure shown in Fig. 3, a stiiiiening-piece la is provided of the saine extent as the lining-piece 4l in the first structure, and a soit and pliable lining l5 is employed which extends coincidently with the outer piece Q. Thus the stitleningpiece la forms an interlining for the boot-top except at the described portion A.
The extent ol the pliable portion of the boot-top is such that when the boot is worn said portion lies over the inner and rearward part oi the fleshy portion of the calf ot the wearers leg, extending down toward the ankle to a point at which the muscles begin noticeably to merge or be inserted into the tendons et the ankle. llChe leg-portion ol the boot is thus made soft and pliable throughout the partthereot covering that. portion of the leg of the rider adjoining the side of the horse, and the pliable portion` is extended tar enough around the rearvfard side of the leg to accommodate a rider who keeps his toes turned i'ar ont. The boot-top is thus kept `in its proper shape and presents the smootlrsuriaced and sightly appearance characteristic of a stili-topped boot, while at the saine time it gives to a rider all the advantages of a soft-topped boot.
The boot is especially desirable for military use, and for sports, such polo, which necessitate a rider being securely seated upon his horse.
ldhile l have shown and described my invention as en'ibodied in a riding-boot, it will be obvious that it is equally applicable to a legging, pnttee or other artic-le t'or Covering the leg roni knee to ankle.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to Sef'nre by Letters` Patent is:
l. A leg-covering comprising a body portion ot' relatively stiff material, and a pliable portion for covering the inner posterior side of the calf of the leg'.
leg-covering for riding', comprising a pliable body portion, and ineens for etiliening the saine throughout except in that port-ion which covers the inner and rearward iieehy portion ot' the leg' below the knee.
3. A leg-Covering comprising a body portion et' pliable leather, and a lining-piece ot stiff leather, the lining-piece extendinv' so as to cover the leg of the wearer except that portion of the leg which is held against the side of a horse in riding.
4. A stili-topped riding-boot having` a pliable portion at the inner and rearward side of the calf ol the leg.
A riding-boot having a relatively stiff and smooth-surfaced niain leg-portion, and a relatively soft and pliable portion extending` from the top toward the ankle on the inner and rearward side of the leg.
G. A riding-boot having a topportion with an external layer of relatively soft and pliable leather, and a lining-piece of Vrelatively etif" leather, the. lining-piece beingl substantially coextensive with the boot-top but not extending inside that part of the boot-top covering theV inner and rearward side of the fleshy part of the leg below the knee.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my naine inthe presence of two Witnesses.
