' BUTTONHOLE GUIDE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1.913.
Application filed June 6, 1912. Seriai No. 791,982.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. AUGER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole Guide-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive device which can be utilized to hold the cloth during the operation of working the button-hole by hand.
A further object is to provide a device which will grip the cloth securely during the button-hole forming operation.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cloth holder and buttonhole guide embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the cloth de tached from the holder, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View, Fig. 4 is a front view, Fig. 5 is a rear end View, Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing a modified construction.
In the drawing, 2 represents a tubular portion formed preferably of sheet metal, split longitudinally on the underside and provided at one end with depending flanges 3 terminatin in upwardly turned wings 4 whose upper ongitudinal. edges contact with the side walls of the tube 2 and are held in yielding engagement therewith by the tension of the flanges 3, the device being composed of metal having suflicient spring or resiliency so that when it is bent to form the flanges and wings there will be sufficient tension to hold the wings against the walls of the tubular section. As indicated in Fig. 3, the flanges 3 are recessed at one end while the wings extend substantially the full length of the tubular portion and the wings have preferably outwardly turned ends 5, while the end of the tubular section is preferably contracted, as indicated in Fig. 3, thus allowing for the convenient insertion of the cloth on the tubular section. When pressure is applied to the flanges 3 the split tube 2 will be contracted and the wings i separated from the walls of the tube to allow the insertion of the cloth between the wings and the tube. This will be clear from an examination of Fig. 5. When the flanges are released the wings will return to their normal position and grip the cloth and draw it snugly over the curved surface of the tubular section, as indicated in Fig, 1, to allow for the convenient and rapid making of the button-hole. When the buttonhole has been completed, the cloth is drawn off the tubular section and upon opening the wings or jaws 4 another portion of the cloth may be inserted between them and the operation repeated.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modified construction which consists in providing the tubular section 2 with a longitudinal slot 6 and providing jaws 7 which are separated from the tubular portion by a slot 8. The jaws will open to allow the insertion of the cloth between them when pressure is applied to the flanged rear portion and when the jaws are released the tension of the metal will draw the cloth snugly over the slot 6 and grip it firmly to allow the convenient formation of the button-hole.
I have shown a guide clamp formed of one piece of metal and preferably the device will be made in this way, but I do not confine myself to this construction, nor do I wish to be confined to the shape of the spring jaws.
In various ways the details of the device may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a button-hole guide clamp comprising a sheet metal cylindrical member divided longitudinally, over which the cloth is placed, and spring jaws extending parallel substantially with said member and adjacent thereto and adapted to separate to allow the insertion of the cloth between them.
2. A button-hole guide clamp comprising a tubular member, spring jaws depending upon opposite sides of said member and having their upper longitudinal edges in contact with said member, said jaws being adapted to separate and allow the insertion of the cloth between them and said member.
3. A button-hole guide clamp comprising a tubular, sheet-metal member divided longitudinally and having spring jaws formed on its longitudinal edges, said jaws extending lengthwise of said member and having their upper longitudinal edges contacting with said member, pressure on the rear portion of said jaws operating to separate them from said member and allow the insertion of the cloth to be worked between them.
4. A button-hole guide clamp comprising a tubular sheet metal member divided 10ngitudinally and having depending flanges on its longitudinal edges, terminating in upwardly turned spring jaws which are adapted to Contact with the walls of said tubular member, pressure on said flanges operating to separate said jaws, said flanges being recessed to allow the insertion of the cloth to be worked between said jaws and the walls of aid member, the tension of said jaws operating to draw the cloth snugly over the curved surface of said member. 15
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of June, 1912.
JOSEPH T. AUGER.
