To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERIK WILLEM BOLK, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Pekalongan, Java, Dutch East Indies, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Mills Adapted for the Crushing of Sugar-Canes and the like,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mills such as are employed for the crushing of sugarcanes and which comprise three rollers namely, one top roller and two side rollers-the canes; or other material to be crushed being passed first between the top roller and the one side roller and afterward between the top roller} and the other side roller. Sugar cane mills;
of this type are usually driven throughthe top roller shaft which carries a pinion whlch meshes with pinions keyed on the shafts of the side rollers. the top roller and either side roller 1S usually The distance between adjusted by giving a horizontal movement to the bearings of that side roller. The movement of adjustment of the side rollers necessitates an adjustment of the dumbturner and is consequently objectionable.
The movements of the top roller for the purpose of adjustment according to my invention, render'it undesirable to drive the mill in' the usual 'manner as hereinbefore d6, scribed. The mill may be driven satisfacto-.
rily in any one of several ways. In the accompanymg drawings, the dr1v1ng means illustrated involves the "employment of an 7 gardsits left-hand portion, an exterior side view of one end of the mill and, as regards its right-hand portion, a vertical section of the mill check on the line B.1Bf of Fig. 1, the shafts, rollers and dumbturner being also shown. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionon the'line C..-C of Fig. 2, the shafts being omitted. Fig. 4: is a view corresponding to Fig. 3 and illustrating a mill according to my invention without hydraulic cylinders. Fig. 5 illustrates an alternative construction, according to my invention, for a mill without hydraulic cylinders.
Referring in the first instance to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a is the mill cheek. There are, as usual, two of these mill cheeks, one at each end of the mill. 6 is the top roller, 0 the side roller at the inlet side of the mill and (Z the sidefroller'at the discharge side of the .mill. 6, f, andg are respectively the shafts of the three rollers and h is the driving shaft. The bearing for the top roller shaft '6 consists of a fraineic and a bush m, the
latter being situated within wings or upi ward extensions a, a of the frame is. A plate 77 is located at the top of the wings n and rests thereon. The position of the bearing can be positively regulated as regards height by means of lower wedges g, g, and upper wedges 1", a", all of which are actuated by rods s, s. For lateral adjustment of the bearing, wedges t, t are provided which bear on the one hand against the mill cheek and on the other hand against inclined surfaces formed on ribs it which are provided on the wings a. The wedges t, t are moved by means of threaded rods '11, '0, these rods being locked in position by means of nuts Lug, 10, which bear against the top of the cap g which extends across the top of the mill cheek, This cap y of each cheek is held down to the cheek, and the cheek held down to the bedplate 2, by means of bolts 2, a. The shaft may rest directly on the frame is "as shown in the' drawings, or a lower bush or liner may be provided in the hollowof the frame. 2, 2, are the bearings for the side rollers. These bearings may consist of solid bushes, as illustrated, which may be fixed within the mill cheek without any means of adjustment, as, according to my invention, the distances between the top roller and the two side rollers are adjusted by moving the top roller bearing. 3 is the bearingfor a bottom driving shaft.
When it is desired to increase the distances between the top roller and both side rollers, the wedges r, r, and g, g, are moved so as to raise the frame 70. When it' is desired to increase the distance between the 9 top roller'and one side roller and to decrease the distance between the top roller and the other side roller, the wedges t, t,
i are actuated so as to give a lateral motion to the frame 70. The gap or clearance between the top roller and one side roller can be increased or diminished without increasing or diminishing the gap between the top roller and the other side roller by simultaneous adjustment of the wedges a", g, and the wedges t, i. All these movements can be performed when the mill is working.
The mill illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is shown as provided with hydraulic cylinders. The bush m rises and falls with the pressure on the top roller and under the control of the hydraulic cylinder 0, the piston j of which presses against the under side of the plate 72. The bush in its automatic movement is guided by the wings n, n, of the frame between which it slides. In the mill cheek shown in Fig. 4: there is no hydraulic cylinder. The positive adjustment of the top roller bearing by means of the wedges q, r, t is, however, the same as hereinbefore described. Moreovenwhen there is no hydraulic cylinder or other elastic device interposed between the top roller bearing and the cap 1 the construction of top roller bearing shown in Fig. 5 may be adopted. In this case the bearing consists of a lower bush is and an upper bush m and the wedges Z, If act directly on both bushes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which a top roller engages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, means for positively adjusting the height of said bearings within said cheeks, and means for positively adjusting the lateral position of said bearings within said cheeks.
2. In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which a top roller engages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller,bear ings for said shaft in said cheeks, a set of Wedges adapted to be moved horizontally and adapted for positively adjusting the height of said bearings within said cheeks, and an independent set ofwedges adapted to be raised and lowered and adapted for positively adjusting the lateral position of said bearings within said cheeks.

In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which a top roller engages 'with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, means for positively adjusting the height of said bearings within said cheeks, means for positively adjusting the lateral position of said bearings within said cheeks, and'means for elastically controlling the automatic upward movement of said top roller with the pressure exerted on it by the material which is being crushed.

In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which a top roller engages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, a set of wedges adapted to be moved horizontally and adapted for positively adjusting the height of said bearings within said cheeks, an independent set of wedges adapted 'to' be raised and lowered and adapted for positively adjusting the-lateral position of said bearings within saidcheeks, and means for elastically controlling the automatic upward movement of said top'roller with the pressure exerted on it by the material which is being crushed.

In a mill adapted for the crushing. of sugar canes and the-like and in which a top roller engages with each of twoside rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller,'bearings for said shaft in saidcheeks, means for positively adjusting the height of said bearings within said cheeks, means for positively adjusting the lateral position of said bearings within said cheeks, and hydraulic cylinders adapted to control the automatic upward movement of said top roller with the pres sure exerted on it by the material which is being crushed. 7 w a.
6. In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which a top rollerengages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a
shaft which carriesithe said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, aset of wedges adapted to be moved horizontally and adapted for positively adjusting the height of said bearings within said cheeks, V
which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, said'bearings conslsting of a frame provided with uplocated within said wings and above said wardly-extending wings and an upper bush f shaft, means for positively adjusting the height of said frames within said cheeks, and means for positively adjusting the lateral position of said frames within said cheeks.
8. In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in whicha top roller engages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair ofmill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, said bearings consisting of a frame provided with upwardly-extending wings and an upper bush located within said wings and above said shaft, a set of wedges adapted to be moved horizontally and adapted for positively adjusting the height of said frames within said cheeks, and an independent set of wedges adapted to be raised and lowered and adapted for positively adjusting the lateral position of said frames within said cheeks.

In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which a top roller'engages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, said bearings consisting of a frame provided with upwardly-extending wings and an upper bush located within said wings and above said shaft, means for positively adjusting the height of said frames within said cheeks, means for positively adjusting the lateral position of said frames within said cheeks, and hydraulic cylinders located within said frames and above said-upper bushes and adapted to control the automatic upward movement of said top roller with the pressure exerted on it by the material which is being crushed.
10. In a mill adapted for the crushing of sugar canes and the like and in which atop roller engages with each of two side rollers, in combination, a pair of mill cheeks, a shaft which carries the said top roller, bearings for said shaft in said cheeks, said bearings consisting of a frame provided with upwardly-extending wings and an upper bush located within said wings and above said shaft, a set of wedges adapted to be moved horizontally and adapted for positively adjusting the height of said frames within said cheeks, an independent set of wedges adapted to be raised and lowered and adapted for positively adjusting the lateral position of said frames within said cheeks, and hydraulic cylinders located within said frames and above said upper bushes and adapted to control the automatic upward movement of said top roller with the pressure exerted on it by the material which is being crushed.
