Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonon L. FORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness-Bridles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improven'ients in harness bridles, and consists in the peculiarities of construction and novel combinations of elements hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.

A most important object of the invention is to provide a most simple and at the same time a very practicable construction of barness bridle having a three-bucklc overcheck which may be most quickly detached, or in tor-changed.

Another of the very important objects of the present invention is to provide an all leather crown piece for harness bridles, which will permit of the detaching of interchanging of a three buckle overcheck without the use of metal loops or buckles of any kind.

These objects, and others which will here inafter appear, are fully carried into practice by the construction illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a harness bridle embodying the present improvements, with parts broken away to disclose parts which otherwise would be concealed. Fig. 2

is a front view of the same with a part of one check piece broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bridle with parts of the overcheck broken away. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the crown piece, on a larger scale than the preceding figures, showing also a part of the overcheck.

A and B designate the cheek pieces; C the brow band; D and E the winkers; and F the winker brace. These parts may be of the usual, or of any suitable construction. The winker brace F herein shown is of the style patented to me Feb. 9, 1909, Number 911,966 and is connected to the brow band C by a loop f, in the manner and for the purpose described and claimed in my application for U. S. Patent filed Feb. 10, 1910, Serial No. 543,17 5; it being preferred to embody the features which particularly constitute the present invention in a bridle which also has the features of these re ferred to.

G designates the crown piece: H the evercheck and. I the throat latch. The throat latch is, or may be, of the ordinary and well known style. The overcheck is of the threehuckle style. An over-check of this style is closed at the rear ends of its limbs 19 and 20 as well as at the front ends of said limbs. The crown piece is of special constrimtion and as hereinbefore stated is particularly adapted to permit quick detachment and interchange of a three-buckle over-check and is of the utmost simplicity of construction. It is formed of a body or main layer 10 upon which is arranged a second layer, or strap 11, there being a spacer or spreader 12 disposed at the middle of the crown piece be tween said layers. The layers and spreader are secured together by stitches 12-3. The ends of the layer or strap 11 are free, there being rivets or like fastening means for permanently securing it to the main body or layer at places between the spreader and the ends of said strap. The main layer or body is slitted longitudinally at its ends to form at each end a pair of limbs or branches 14: and 15 each of which is formed with spaced perforations 1G.

In practice, the limbs 14 at the ends of the main layer are secured to the ends of the throat latch T by the buckles 17 and the limbs or branches 15 of said main layer are secured to the cheek pieces A and B respectively, by the buckles 18, as is now quite common. The limbs or branches 19 and 20 of the over-check H extend across the upper surface of the body or main layer 10 of the crown piece G, on opposite sides of the spacer or spreader 12 and are held in proper position thereupon by the second layer or strap, 11, whose tree ends are secured to the cheek pieces A and B by the buckles 18, the free ends of the limbs or branches 15 of the main layer and the ends of the second layer or strap 11 both extending into the check pieces, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The main layer 10 and second layer 11 of the crown piece also extend through loops 0 formed at the end of the brow band C, whereby the latter is connected to the sides of the crown piece. Tn practice. the places of these connections are preferably covered by ornaments, which need not be herein shown.

From the foregoing the simplicity of the present construction and the facility it affords for quick application of the overcheck, or interchange thereof, even by an inexperienced person, and the very slight cost it adds to a bridle lacking the latter advan-' overcheck may be removed or applied, with-' out detaching the crown piece itself from the bridle, even when the overcheck is of a style wherein the rear ends of the limbs 19 and 20 are brought together or closed, and that when the layer 11 is again secured to the cheek pieces the overcheck will be held upon the crown piece, in a manner, however, which permits its back and forth movement relative thereto, within the desired limits of movement of the animals head. It will. also be noted that the crown piece requires no metal in its construction, thereby contributing to its economical production, to its neat appearance and to the comfort with which it may be worn by the animal.

It further will be noted that the spreader 12 keeps the limbs 19 and 20 of the overcheck properly separated and, in conjunction with the layers 10 and 11, provides channels within which said limbs are free to move back and forth with like movements of the animals head and avoids bulging of the crown piece and the incidental unsightly appearance of the bridle and its undue pressure upon the head of the animal where the limbs of the overcheck pass through, which unsightly appearance and pressure would occur if the two layers of the crown piece were mounted surface-to-surface and without said spreader between them. The spreader is of a thick ness approximately that of each of the limbs 19 and 20 of the overcheck.

It will further be noted that while the exemplified form of the invention is greatly preferred, yet changes in details may be made, without departing from its spirit or the scope of subjoined claims.

Having now described the invention what I believe to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A crown piece for a harness bridle comprising superimposed layers whose ends are arranged to be secured to appropriate parts of the bridle so as to permit detachment of the upper layer from said parts independently of the lower layer, said layers being secured together approximately at the longitudinal center of the crown piece to provide separated spaces for the limbs of an overcheck, said upper layer being de void of permanent attachment to the lower layer from the portions of the spaces which receive saidlimbs outward to the ends of the upper layer, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

2. Ina harness bridle, the combination of cheek pieces and a crown piece, the crown main layer on opposite sides of the spacer,

3. A crown piece for a harness bridle comprising a main layer whose ends are slit longitudinally to providelimbs which are integral with the layer and are adapted to secure it to the throat latch and cheek pieces of the bridle, a second layer having free ends arranged to be connected with said cheek pieces, a spacer disposed between said layers and arranged approximately at the middle of the crown piece,

said layers and spacer being formed of flexible, non-metallic material, and stitches for securing them together, whereby spaces adapted to receive the limbs of an overcheck are provided between said layers and are separated from each other by said spacer, the portions of the second layer from the ends of the spacer outward being devoid of attachment to the main layer, whereby they are movable outward from said main layer and when so moved uncover said spaces.

l. A harness bridle comprising cheek pieces, a throat latch, a crown piece and an overcheck, said crown piece having a layer whose ends are provided with members which are secured to the throat latch and cheek pieces and also having a second layer which is secured between its ends to the first mentioned layer, and has its ends detachably secured to the cheek pieces, and said overcheck having limbs extending across the crown piece between said layer and respectively arranged at opposite ends of the place where the layers are secured together, i the portions of the second layer from the inner longitudinal edges of the limbs of the overcheck outward being free from attach- ,ment to said first-mentloned layer, whereby the spaces which receive said limbs are overcheck when the ends of the second layer are detached from the cheek pieces.

5. A harness bridle, comprising cheek pieces, a throat latch, a crown piece and an overcheck, said overcheck having limbs and said crown piece having a main body or player, a spacer and a second layer, the

open for removal or application of the latter, and the layers and spacer beingsecured together, the main body or layer hav in each of its ends provided with members which are secured to the cheek pieces and ends of the throat latch, respectively, the ends of the second layer being detachably secured to the cheek pieces and the portions of said second layer from the inner hmgitudinal edges of the limbs of the overeheck outward to said ends being movable away from the main layer when the second layer is detached from the cheek pieces, to thereby permit the convenient removal or application of the overcheck.

6. A harness bridle comprising cheek pieces having buckles at their upper ends, a threat latch, an all-leather crown piece, and a three-buckle overcheck, said crown piece having a main body or layer, a spacerand a second layer or strap, the spacer being disposed between the ends of the crown piece and being shorter than the latter, and the layer and spacer being secured together by stitches, the main body or layer having each of its ends provided with members which are secured to the cheek pieces by the buckles oil the latter and to the throat latch, respectively, the ends of the second layer being detiwhably secured to the cheek pieces by said bi'icldes and the portions of said second layer from the inner longitudinal edges of the limbs of the ovcrcheck outward to said ends being, movable away from the main layer when the second layer is detached from the cheek pieces, to thereby permit the convenient removal or application of the over-check.
