To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that 1, JOHN CALVIN STAN- roan, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to inngrovements in neckties and more particularly to attachments therefor.

It has heretofore been customary to n'ianufacture neckties in various lengths for use with collars of different sizes, and this has resulted in annoyance, not only to the manufacturer but also to the retail dealer.

The object of my invention is to obviate such annoyance and expense incident thereto, and enable a complete stock of ties to be made of uniform length and to provide an attachment for the ties which will permit the same to be readily, quickly and accurately adjusted for use with collars of different sizes.

\Vith this object in View, the invention consists in certain structural features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my improvement to a tie. Fig. 2 is a view illust ating the manner of shortening a tie with the use of my improvement. Fig. 3 is a view of a shortened tie in place on a collar, and Fig. t is a view of a modilicatirm.

1. represents a necktie of usual form having a comparatively narrow intermediate portion to encircle the collar and having wider end portions.

At any desired place between the ends of the narrow collar-encircling portion 2 of the tie, a strip or section of rigid material is attached. This strip 3 may be made of.

any suitable material which will possess sufficient rigidity to prevent easy bending thereof and may have a width approximating the width of the narrow portion of the tie and a length approximately one inch, more or less. The strip 3 of rigid material may be attached to the narrow portion of the necktie in any suitable manncr,-as by stitching as shown in the drawings,and one end portion only need to be thus secured to the tie. It is not essential that the strip be secured at its extreme end to the tie but may be secured in proximity to one end thereto, as shown in Fig. .l.

\Vhen the strip 3 lies flat against the tie, the latter will have its n'laximum length, but when it is desired to use a tie of shorter length to accommodate a smaller collar, the user will fold the material of the tie over both ends of the strip so as to form three (werlying plies, as illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be readily understood that when the tie has been thus shortened and the folded portions inclosed between the folds of a collar, the folds of the shortened tic, will, by reason of the employment of the strip of rigid material, be prevented from displacement.

By attaching the strip 3 intermediate of its ends to the tie, as illustrated in Fig. t, two adjustments of shortened ties may be el l'ected,---one of such adj ustmcnts being made by folding the material of the tie over one end of the strip, nearest the point of attachment, and the other adjustment being effected by folding the material over the end of the strip farthest removed from the point of attachment and in both instances folding a portion of the tie upon itself.

I do not wish to confine myself to any specific material composing the strip 2-3 or to any particular means for fastening it to the tie, as these details may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention or limiting its scope.
