WILLIAM G. PRICE, OF NEW CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DAMPING DEVICE FOR TRUGK-BOLSTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 28, 1913.
Patented801911.23, .1913.
Serial No. 764,159.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, iv'nmmn G. Pinon, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Castle in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in 1)amping Devices for Truck-Bolsters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to railway-car trucks, and more especially to a device for damping the swing of the bolster.
it is common practice in railway-car trr.;ls to mount the bolster upon swinging supports so that the bolster is free to swing longitudinally with respect to itself and transverse with respect to the car frame. lly allowing for this swing of the bolster the bolster COHfUPlUS to the change of direction of the ear-body when rounding curves on rough tracks and the like, and as a result better riding of the cars is obtained. Unless this longitudinal movement of the bolster, however, is checked the movement becomes cumulative and the swing of the bolster becomes so great as to occasion the discomforture of the passengers within the car.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and ellicient device by means of which this longitudinal movement of the bolster may be damped and to these ends the invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 1* igure .l is a plan view of a portion of a truck showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the bolster; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the same line as Fig. 2 but cut away to show only a portion of the bolster; and Fig. 4- a section on the line Jr-d Fig.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 2 designates the side frames of a suitable truck which is supported on the wheels 23. The transoins 4: connectthe side frames 2 and between said transoms is located a suitable bolster 5 which is composed of the compression member 6 and the tension member 7. The bolster at its ends rests upon the springs S and said springs are supported by the hangers 9 which are suspended from the transom.
At one end of the bolster is the wearplate 10 which is riveted or otherwise secured to the top compression member (3 of the bolster. .ltcsting on this wear-plate 10 is the danu'iing plate ll which is provided with the slot .12. it plate 13 rests upon the damping plate ti and said plate is held in place by the bolt l-lwhich passes up through the lower member 7 of the bolster and through the top member (5, the wearplate 10. the slot 12 of the damper plate and the plate 13. A spring 17 is interposed between a washer n; and the washer i? on the bolt, said spring being held in compression by the nut 18. i
The plate I?) has the end tlangcs li which engage the ends of the \vcar-plate 10 and act as additional means to hold the plate 13 in place and also to prevent grit and grease from getting on the friction surfaces of the damper plate.
The damper-plate has the downwardly extending portions 20 which are provided with the openings 21. lins 2; are shrunlt in the openings 21, and secured to said pins by the cotter pins ii-3 are the rods 'lhe o 'iposite ends of the rods 9i are pivotallv connected to the transonis by the bolts .23. Springs 52:; are interposed between the transolns and the nuts .27 on said bolts to take up wear and prevent rattling.
in the running of the truck the bolster will have a certain alnount of longitudinal swing which is damped by the action of the damping plate 11. moving in frictional contact with the wear-plate l0 and the plate 13 which moves with the bolster. The damper plate is held by the rod 2-1- while the tension of the spring 15 controls the pressure with which the damper-plate is held between said plate and the wear-plate. In this manner the swing of the bolster is controllial, which adds greatly to the con'rl'ort of the passcngcrs. Due to the inclined position of the hangers l) the bolster in swinging will be raised at one end and lowered at the other and it will move up and down due to the re silicncy of its supporting springs and this action is provided for by the rods 524- which are pivotally connected to the transoins.
hat 1. claim is:
.l. in a car-truck, the combination with the transoms, of a swing-bolster bet-ween the same a damper-plate engaging the upper face of said bolster, a plate in, slidable engagement with the upper face of said damper-plate and connected to the bolster, and connections between said damper-plate and the transom.
tit)
2. In a car-truck, the combination with the transoms, of a swing-bolster between the same, a slotted damper-plate engaging the upper face of said bolster at one end thereof, a slidable plate on said dampenplate, the bolt connecting said slidable plate to the bolster passing through said slotted damper, a spring on said bolt, and connections between said damper-plate and the transoms.
3. In a car-truck, the combination with the t-ransoms, of a swing-bolster between the same, a dampenplate engaging the upper face of the bolster, a slidable plate engaging said damper-plate and connected to said bolster, and a rod connected to said damperplate and pivotally connected to the transom.
l. In a car-truck, the combination with the transoms, of a swing-bolster between the same, a damper-plate engaging the upper face of said bolster, a slidable plate engaging said damper-plate and connected to said bolster, a downwardly projecting portion on said damper, and a rod connected to said projection and pivo-tally connected to said transom.
5. In a car-truck, the combination with the transoms, of a swing-bolster between the same, a damper-plate engaging the upper face of said bolster at one side of the center thereof, a slidable plate engaging said damper-plate and connected to the bolster, a downwardly projecting portion on said damper-plate, a rod connected thereto and pivotally connected to the transom beyond the center of said bolster.
6. In a car-truck, the combination with the transoms, of a swing-bolster between the same, a wear-plate on the upper plate of said bolster at one side thereof, a slotted dampenplate on said wear-plate, a slidable plate on said damper-plate, a bolt connecting said slidable plate to said bolster, a spring on said bolt, a downwardly projecting portion on said damper-plate, a rod con nected to said projection and pivotally con nected to the transom beyond the center thereof. p
7. In a car-truck, the combination with the transo1ns,of a swing-bolster between the same, a damper-plate engaging the upper face of said bolster, a slidable plate on said damper-plate having downwardly projecting ends and connected to said bolster, and
connections between said damper-plate and the transoms.
8. In a car truck, the combination with the transoms, of a swing-bolster between the same, a channel shaped damper-plate engaging the upper face of said bolster and link connections between the flanges of the damper plate and the transoms.
In testimony whereof, I the said WILLIAM G. PRICE have hereunto set my hand.
