To (ZZZ whom may concern Be it known that l, Fitmnirro CONilGN'lI, a subject of Victor Immanuel Ill, King of Italy, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful .lmprovements in Marking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a new and improved marking device, having particular reference to a tool for tailors to hold their marking chalk and the marking wheel, for outlining patterns, having for its object, among other things, the arrangement of the parts of such a device that the chalk and wheel may be securely held in variously adjusted positions, all so designed that they may be manufactured at the minimum cost.

To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the marking device, having certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure l is a view of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view thereof, with the side plates and marking wheel partly in section.

I11 the practice of my invention, I provide two side plates 11, which are substantially triangular in shape, and having a slot 2 theretl'irough near one corner of the triangle, through which projects the pin 3, upon which is rotatably mounted the toothed marking wheel l. The pin 3 is reduced in diameter at both. ends where it passes through said plates and upon one end is a washer 5 and a nut 6 is threaded upon the other end, both of which cooperate to hold the side plates together at one point, and the pin in its various relative positions within the slots 2, whereby the periphery of the wheel i may project beyond the said side plates or be entirely covered thereby, as desired. The plates are joined at the opposite end by the thumb screws 8, which pass freely through one of the plates and are threaded into the other. The rotation of these screws in one direction draws the plates together and their rotation in the opposite direction allows them to spread apart,

the metal having purpose.

Held between the side plates and the screws is a block of marking chalk, designated by the numeral 7. By holding the chalk in this manner, it is always dry and not subject to the action of the moisture of the hand, as when held between the fingers, and it permits the arrangement of the chalk block so that only sullieient projects beyond the side plates to present a marking surface, thereby insuring the consumption of substantially the entire piece.

The marking wheel t may be operated with the wheel in contact with the cloth in substantially the position shown by the dotted lines A-B of Fig. 1, or with the edges of the side plates resting upon the cloth and steadying the wheel, as shown by line C--D in the same figure.

Much care and experience is required to mark a garment with the wheel and holder in the first above described position, as there is nothing to steady or guide the hand, but if the side plates are allowed to rest upon the cloth, as in the second above described position, they steady the wheel and it is a comparatively simple operation to properly guide the marking wheel.

Of course, the shape of the device and other minor details of my invention may be varied considerably, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with two side plates; of a pintle connecting the same at one end; a marking wheel mounted upon said pintle between said side plates and rotatable upon said pintle; a block for holding said plates apart opposite to said pintle; and screws passing through said plates adj acent to said block arranged so as to draw said plates together and grip said block without hearing against the sides of the marking wheel and prevent its rotation.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the side plates, substantially triangular in form; of a marking sutlicient spring for this wheel rotatably mounted between said Plates at one corner of the triangle; a separable block for holding said plates apart opposite said marking wheel; and screws at the opposite corners of said triangle passing freely through one of said side plates and threaded into the other of said side plates and arranged to draw said plates together and grip said block without interfering with the rotation of said marking wheel.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with two side plates, having substantially parallel slots therethrough; of, a pin connecting said side plates and passing through said slots; a nut threaded on said pin; a marking wheel upon said pin between said plates; and screws passing freely through one of said plates and threaded into the other of said plates, whereby each of said plates is held in such proper relation t0 the other that the said slots are always in register with each other.

4. In a device of the character described,

the combination with companion side plates of substantially the same form and shape, having slots therethrough; of a pin connecting said side plates, the ends thereof being of reduced diameter and passing through said slots; a marking wheel upon said pin between said plates; means connected with one end of said pin to prevent the accidental disengagement thereof from the side plates but permitting its movement within the slot therein; a nut threaded upon the opposite end of said pin; and screws passing through.
