To all wit-0m it may concern Be. it known that I, SWAN TEVANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Attaching Bail-Ears to Sheet-Metal Pails or Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
"My invention relates. to improvements in machines for attaching bail ears to sheet metal pails or vessels.
The object of my invention is to provide an automatic machine which will feed the bail ears one by one from a hopper or receptacle containing them in bulk, and attach them to thebodies of the pails or vessels to which they are to be applied andproduce liquid tight closures or joints between the bail earand pail body.
' My invention consists in connection with cooperating bail ear attaching dies mounted respectively upon a stationary horn and upon a reciprocating slide or plunger, of a feed chute for the bail cars, a feed slide for moving the bail ears one by one into position for attachment to the pail body, and an inclined rotatable hopper having orifices at its bottom edge or rim for the'bail ears to pass through and by which the bail ears are automatically fed one by one to the feed chute and feed slide.
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front. elevation of a bail ear attaching machine or press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail central vertical section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view partly in horizontal section showing the bail ear feed slide. In the drawing, A represents the frame of the machine, B the horn whichsupports the lower die, 0 the reciprocating slide which carries the upperdie, D the lower clenching or seaming die, the same having an outer movable member D, F the upper or reciproeating clenching or seaming die carried upon the reciprocating slide or punch C, G the feed slide for the bail ears, H the feed device or valve for the shellac or liquid packing, and H the reservoir or vessel containing the same.
M is the feed chute for the bail ears and N the rotary feed hopper for the bail ears.
. The pail body X is furnished with an opening X surrounded by a seaming flange w. The bail ear X is furnished with a base flange m and with a cap X having a seaming flange 00 The bail ear X andcap X are first assembled together, and the seaming flange onthe cap slight-1y contracted so as to hold the bail ear X and the cap X together.
The bail ear and cap thus assembled are'iirst fed into the lower die on the horn, as shown in Fig. 5, and then the pail body is inserted over the horn in position to receive the bail ear, and then the upper die F depresses the movable member D of the lower die, thus projecting the bail ear through the opening in the pail body and assembling the bail ear and cap with the pail body into position for clenching or'seaming the same together, the
further ownward movement of the reciproeating slideor punch which operates the up per die, then actuates the shellac or packing feeder H and causes the requisite amount of shellac or liquid packing to be fed intov the joint or seam before the flanges or folds thereof are closed or compressed together by the further downward movement of the upper die which then takes place. The horn B is secured to the frame A by bolts 6.
The reciprocating slide O which actuates the upper die is moved upand down in its guides C by a crank C on the main driving shaft K which is journaled in suitable bearings A on the frame of the machine, and furnished with a drive Wheel K The main or central portion D' of the lower die has a stem (Z fitting in a suitable socket in the horn B, and secured thereto by set screws 6 and'is furnished with a central channel and branch channels (Z through which the shellac or liquid packing is supplied to the seaming flanges of the bail ear, bail ear cap and pail body. The outer or surrounding portion D of the lower die is furnished with a central socket or die cavity (Z receiving and surrounding the main portion D of the lower die, the upper portion of this cavity also serving to receive the bail 7 car, as will be readily understood from Figs.
4 and 5 of the drawing. The outer or surrounding portion D of the lower die is mounted movably on the main portion D and is held in position by a coiled spring D which surrounds the stem (Z of the die and bears against a stufling box nut D secured to the movable member D of the die. The packing D of the stuflin'g box prevents escape of the shellac or liquid packing from the die cavity (Z of the die member D The horn B is furnished with a feed passage 5 connecting with the feed passage d and stem (Z of the lower die 1), and with the feeder H through suitable connecting pipes h. The shellac or liquid packing feeder H preferably consists of a'm'ovable or reciprocating valve a valve shell h connecting with the feed pipes h leading to the lower seaming die and with the shellac or liquid packing pipe ]L2. The feed valve H is preferably held normally closed by a spring H and it is preferably automatically opened, so as to feed or supply the requisite amount of shellac or liquid packing to the seam joint before theflanges thereof are closed or pressed together, from the reciprocating slide of the upper die by a connecting rod or strap 7L secured to said slide, having an eye h surrounding the stem of the valve H and engaging a pin 72, thereon.
The bail ear feed slide G is mounted to reciprocate in suitable guides g, and is preferably actuated at suitable intervals as required in one direction by a spring 9 and in the opposite direction by an incline or cam g on the reciprocating slide 'C of the upper die F, which engages a roller g on a crank arm or lever g havinga shaft pivot 9 and is connected by a link g with the bail ear feed slide G. The bail ears with their caps assembled thereon are delivered in front of the feed slide G by a chute M, and the feed slide G is preferably furnished with a curved cavity 9 on the edge thereof adjacent to the chute, so that as the feed slide is moved forward itwill permit l the bail ears in the chute to slightly descend,
and so that when the feed slide moves backward it will force the column of bail ears in the chute slightly upward; this movement reservoir H through a connecting or? of the chute \1.

The feed chute M has at its upper end a circular or disk-like extension M which constitutes the stationary bottom of the rotary feed hopper N, and this disk-like extension M of the feed chute is furnished wit-h a circularly curved segmental rib or guide m forming a curved passage or chamber m at the lower side ofthe rotary cylindrical hoppr N to receive the bail ears as they 7 issue from the rotary hopper;

The rotary inclined cylindrical hopper N is connected to its operating shaft- N by a spider N having a hub N secured to the shaft N The spider N 'has a marginal rim or flange N embracing the upper end of the hopper N and to which the hopper is se cured. The hopperN is continuously rotatedby means of a pulley l onits shaft N through abelt N passing around an idler ulley N and a driving pulley K? on the driving shaft K.
The inclined stationary bottom 1% of the rotary feed hopper N is furnished with a movable or'yielding cover M which is preferably hinged at m to the feed chute M. so that this cover by opening or yielding may prevent the bail cars from becomingstuck or jam'medin the curved connecting passage The cover M extends over the segmental pock'et M1 'on both sides of the chute M, but is shown in Fig. 6 as broken away on one side in order to disclose the parts beneath this cover. The curved connecting passage m of the feed chute M is also preferably. furnished with a yielding armxor Egate m at its lower end adj acent to the upper end of the feed chute M-so that a bail =ear may be forced outthr'ough this yieldi'nggate in order to prevent clogging. or jamming when necessary.

In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn and upper and lower bail ear clenching dies, the latter being mounted on the horn and an inclined feed chute, of an inclined rotating feed hopper having bail ear openings in its peripheral wall at its lower edge, and a feed slide on said horn'for pushing the bail ears one by one from the feed chute into position between said dies, substantially as specified.

In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn and upper and lower bail ear clenching dies, the latter being mounted on the horn and an inclined feed chute, of an inclined rotating feed hopper having bail ear openings in its peripheral wall at its lower edge, said feed chute having a segmental curved bail ear receiving pocket at its upper edge and a feed slide on said horn for pushing the bail ears one by one from the feed chute into position between said dies, substantially as specified.

combination with a horn and upper and lower bail ear clenching dies, the latter being mounted on the horn and an inclined feed chute, of an inclined rotating feed hopper having bail ear openings in its peripheral wall at its lower edge, said feed chute having a segmental curved bail ear receiving pocket at its upper end furnished with a yielding cover, substantially as specified.
' 6. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn and upper and lower bail ear clenching dies, the latter being mounted on the horn and an inclined feed chute, of an inclined rotating feed hopper having bail ear openings in its peripheral wall at its loweredge, said feed chute having a segmental curved bail ear receiving pocket at its upper end and a yielding gate at the lowermost end of said curved pocket, substantially as specified.
7. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with upper and lower seaming devices, of a reciprocating feed slide for the bail ears, a feed chute for the bail ears, a rotating feed'hopper for the bail ears, furnished with. bail ear openings and a feed device for supplying the liquid packing or lacquer to the seam beforethe flanges thereof areseamed together by the dies, substantially as specified.
8. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn, of a die thereon, means for feeding liquid packing to the bail ear in the die on the'horn, a feed slide for the bail, ears, an upper die,'a slide for operating the upper die, a feed chute for delivering the bail ears to the bail ear feed slide, and a rotary feed hopper. having openings in itsperip'heral wall at the lower edge thereof for delivering the bail ears to the feed chute, substantially as specified.
,9. In a, bail ear attaching machine, the
combination with a horn, of a die thereon, means for feeding liquid'packing to the bail ear in the die on the horn, afeed slide for the bail ears, an upper die, a slide for operating the upper die, a feedchute for delivering the bail ears to the bail ear feed slide, and-a rotary feed hopper having openings in its peripheral wall at the lower edge thereof for delivering the bail ears to the feed chute, said feed'chute having a curved pocket adjacent to said rotary feed hopper, substantially as specified.
10. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with ahorn, of a die thereon, means for feeding liquid packing to the bail ear in the die on the horn, a feed slide for the bail ears, an upper" die, a slide for operating the upper die, a feed chutefor delivering the bail ears to the bail ear feed slide, and a rotary feed hopper having openings in its peripheral wall at the lower edge thereof for delivering the bail ears to the feed chute, said feed chute having a curved pocket adjacent to said rotary feed hopper provided with a yielding cover, substantially as Specified.
11. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn, of a die thereon, a feed slide for the bail ears, an upper die, a slide for operating the upper die, a feed chute for delivering the bail ears to the bail ear feed slide, and a rotary feed hopper having openings therein for delivering the bail ears to the feed chute, said feed chute having a curved pocket adjacent to said rotary feed hopper, said curved pocket having a yielding gate at the end thereof adjacent to the feed chute, substantially as specified.
12. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn, of a die. thereon, a feed slide for the bail ears, an upper die, a slide for operating the upper die, a feed chute for delivering the bail ears to the bail ear feed slide, and a rotary feed hopper having openings in its peripheral wall at the lower edge thereof for delivering the bail ears to the feed chute, said die on the horn having a cavity to receive and surround the bail ear and its assembled cap prior to the application of the pail body thereto, and
means for feeding liquid packing to the bail ear in the cavity of said die on the horn, substantially as specified.
13. In a bail ear attaching machine, the combination with a horn, of a die thereon, a feed slide for the bail ears, an upper die, a slideifor operating the upper die, a feed chute for delivering the bail ears to the bail car feed slide, a rotary feed hopper having openings in its peripheral wall at the lower edge thereof for delivering the bail ears to the feed chute and a feed device for supplying a liquid packing to thebail ear flanges before the dies operate to attach the bail ear to the pail body, substantially as specified. r
14. The ccmbination'with a horn and upper and lower bail ear clenching dies, the
latter being mounted on the horn and an inclined feed chute, of aninclined rotating feed hopper, furnished with a series of discharge openings in its peripheral wall at its lower edge, and a-ieedslide on said horn torpushing the bail ears one by one from the feed chute into, position between said dies, substantially asspecified.
15. T he combination with a horn and upper and lower bail ear clenching (lies, the latter belng mounted on the horn and'aninclined feed chute, of an inclined rotating feed hopper, furnished with a series of discharge openings in itsperipheral wall at its lower edge, said feed chute having a curved guide at'its upper end forming a segmental pocket concentric with the rotating feed hopper, and a feed slide on said horn. for pushing the bail ears one by one Copies 0! this patent may be obtained for from the feed chute into position between said dies, substantially as specified.

17.- The combination with an inclined 'feed chute, of an inclined rotating teed hopper, furnished with a series of discharge openings'at its lower edge, saidv teed chute having a curved guide at its upper end forming a segmental pocket concentric with the rotating feed hopper, a yielding cover for said segmental, pocket and a yielding gate at the end of said pocket adjacent to the feed chute, substantially asspecified.
18. The combination with an inclined feed chute, of an inclined rotating teed hoppcniurnished with a series of discharge openings at its lower edge, said feed chute having a curved guide atits upper end (35 forming a segnientalpocket concentric with the rotating feed hopper, and a yielding gate at the end of said pocket adjacentto the feed chute, substantially as specified;
