Application filed December 21, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK N. MARTIN- DALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at tipraglleville, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful \Vrench, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to wrenches, and aims to provide a wrench embodying but a single part or handle provided at its ends with single nut receiving openings, the openings being of such figuration or contour as to engage a plurality of various sized nuts, and the engagements ot the various nuts being in close proximity to the ends and corners of the wrench, thus enabling the wrench to be applied to various sized nuts without adjusting and in a con 'venient manner, whether the nuts are in the open and unencumbered or whether they are in corners and close quarters.
It is also the object of the present invention to provide a wrench of the character indicated which may be stamped or punched from heavy sheet metal or other stock and which shall have a broad field of service, the same being, especially useful for tightening and loosening nuts in the corners of carriage bodies, chests and the like.
It is known that heretofore wrenches have been provided which are capable ofgrasping various sized nuts, but it is not known that a wrench has been provided having an opening at each end, the openings being o't such figuration or contour as to each receive a plurality of various sized nuts that the nuts may be engaged close to and in ap' proximate equal proximity to the end and corners ot the wrench.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring specifically to the drawing, the numerals 5, 5, 5 and 5, represent the respective wrenches, each of which is constructed of a flat plate or bar of sheet metal or other stock, preferably in the form of a double or compound curve.
In the form illustrated in Fig. I], a handle 5 is provided at one end with an opening (5, the inner edge oi. which is stepped as indicated by the numeral 7, so as to receive a pair of different sized nuts, in order that each nut will be arranged close at an equal proximity to the ends and corners of the wrench. The other end of the wrench or handle is provided with an approximately square nut opening 8 having a lug 9 projecting inwardly from its outer edge and having its side edges each provided with an outwardly facing step as indicated by the numerals l0 and 11 cooperating with the lug to provide supplemental :tomr-sided nut openings, to accommodate various sizes oil? nuts. The. latter opening is so designed that each of the nuts may be grasped on all four sides, this being o'l. advantage for the reason that the wrench when applied to a nut; will be held firmly in position and will not fall from the nut when the hand is removed from the handle.
In the form shown in Fig. 2, the wrench or handle 5 is provided with an opening (3 at one end, the inner edge of the opening being stepped as indicated by the numeral 7 so as to receive and grasp three ditl'ercnt sizes of nuts, while the other end is provided with an opening 8 for receiving one or two sizes of nuts.
in the form illustrated in Fig. 3, one end of the handle or wrench 75" is provided with an opening (3, the inner edge of which is stepped as indicated by the numeral 7" so as to receive two ditl'erent sizes o'l. nuts, and the other end is provided with an opening 8" having a lug 9" projecting inwardly 'l'rom its outer edge so as to provide the notches 10 and 11". The notches l0" and ll" are each adapted to receive a dill'erentsized nut, whereas the opening itself is adapted to receive a larger size of nut.
The handle or wrench 5 shown in Fig. 4-, is provided with the respective openings 6 and G at its ends, the inner edges of the respective openings being stepped as indicated by the numeral 7 and 7 a so that each opening is adapted to receive two or more different sized nuts, in order that the nuts will be arranged close to and in equal proximity to the ends and corners of the wrench.
In all of the forms, it will be noted that the handles are each provided with a single opening at each end, the openings being of such figurations or contours as to receive and grasp a plurality of various sized nuts at like distances from the end, and corners,
, thus, the wrenches may be conveniently employed for tightening and loosening nuts in the corners of carriage bodies and chests and in other close quarters, as well as for ordinary purposes. There is no adjusting of the wrench necessary to accommodate the various sized nuts and the openings are so disposed that the wrench may be readily turned without the ends thereof encountering parts adjacent the nut, as when the wrench is employed for tightening or loosening the nut in the corner of a carriage body, chest or the like. The present wrenches are therefore especially useful for tightening or loosening nuts in corners or close quarters, but are also useful for ordinary purposes, as well.
It is to be noted that each wrench is provided with but a single opening in each end, this being desirable and providing for a compact arrangement so as to accomplish the results aimed at.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is A wrench handle provided with an approximately square nut opening at one end having a lug projecting inwardly from its outer edge, the side edges of the opening each having an outwardly facing step cooperating with the lug to provide supplemental four-sided nut openings.
