Specification at Letters Patent. Lpplication filed m. an. 1912. semi No. 704,933.
Patented Sept. ,2, 1913.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. Gum: and Jesse F. Hnnsmr, citizens of the United States, and residents of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain useful Sign; declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a sectional or built up sign of improved and simplified construction. I a
The feature of the invention lies in the use of sectional front or letter carryin plates, intermediate perforated sheets an rear or clamping plates, all of standardized construction such that the building of any desired sign will be quickened and simplified.
The nature of the invention will be under.- stood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 1s a front elevation'of the same. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of'the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rear side of the clamping plate. Fig. 5 shows the perforated frame member shown in Fig. 3 but removed from the sign. Fig. 6 is a perspective of one section of the sign with portions broken away showing the relation of the various parts.
Indeta'il there is shown in the drawings a built up sign having front plates 10, rear or clamplng plates '11 with aplate of perforated material 12 secured between the two and with the various sections thus built up, assembled and supported by longitudinal rods 13 at the rear side of the front plate 12.
As shown in details in Figs. 1, 3 and 6, the front plate 10 is formed of thin sheet metal with a portiontherein cut away in the form of a letter or character and having a rib 14 upon one side, here shown u on the left-hand side, which projects behlnd the adjoining plate 10 and serves to stren then the sign in addition to closing the joint 'etween the adjacent plates 10. There is a projection 15 from the rear side of the front plate and near the upper and lower edges and substantially midway between the sides in which there is a hole 16 for the rods 13 upon which said front plates 10 are supported. There is a notch 17 out in the proection 15 close to the plate 10 upon the inframe are rectangular in outline and have the ends 18 flattened to permit them to be inserted in the notches 17 in the projections 15 of the front plate 10. The side bars 19 of said preferably very narrow and the distance between them is equal to the width of the character out on the front plate. Said side bars may have a depth materially greater than. their thickness, as shown in The intermediate plate 12 may be formed of perforated sheet metal, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6. Said plate has the same general outline as that of the clampin plate 11, but has itsedges upon two si es bent at right angles to fit snugly over the narrow si e ribs of the clamping plate 11.
Our invention is assembled as 'follows: The perforated intermediate plates 12 are first slid upon the front face of ing plate 11, after which said clam in plate is slid into place upon the rear si e o the front plate 10 which has the desired opening cutthrough it and held by means' of the notches 17 in the rearwardprojections 15 and with one edge of the interme diate plate pressed against the rib 14 by-one of the side bars of the clamping plate 11. This forms one unit of the sign. Other units with the desired 0 enings are assembled in a like manner an they are combined in the desired order and the rods 13 are slipped through the holes 16 in said projections, with the ribs 14 of one plate lying immediately behind the edge of the adjacent plate. The sign may then be hung or used in any desired manner.
We claim as our invention:
1. A sign composed of a plurality of similar sections, each section having a front plate with an opening therethrough, a clamping plate with a away and in registry with said front plate opening, a per orated sheet between said front plate and said clampin plate, means for slidably securin said clamping plate to said front plate for clamping said perforated sheet, and means connecting with said supporting means for securing said sections in place n series the clampportion thereof cut.
the opening in said front plate, the ends of said clampmg plate being flattened, a perforated sheet between said front plate and said clamping plate and with the edges of said sheet bent against thelateral edges of said clampin plate, notched projections on said front plate for slidably engaging the flattened ends of said clamping plate, and means for supporting said sections in series.
3. A sign composed of a plurality of similar sections, each section having a front plate with an opening therethrough, one
lateral edge of said front plate being re cessed and adapted, to extend behind the 'neXt one of said front plates, a skeleton imaoee clamping plate of substantially the same outline as said frontplate, an open-work sheet located between said front late and said clampin plate and having t e lateral edges thereo bent against the sides of said clampingplate, recessed projections on said front late slidably enga 'ng the ends of said 0 amping plate an open-work sheet against said front late, and a rod extending through one 0 said projections on each front p bling said sections in series.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto at fixed our signatures in the presence of the I witnesses herein named. a
