To all Iwhom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ETHNGHAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Ocean, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to clasps, more especially to that form of clasps used onl hose supporters.

An object of the present invention-is togenerally improve and simplify this class of devices and to further provide a novel operating lever for manipulating the loop member which coacts with the stud in clamping a fabric, the said lever being terminally equipped with a spring eye which forms a handle for manipulating the lever and further forms a lock adapted to spring into engagement with a locking projection carried by the cla'sp back plate and positively lock the lever against accidental disengagement.

With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication:-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the clasp in open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the clasp in closed position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a modified form having a metal back plate, the clasp being shown closed. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the parts shown in Fig. 5.

Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates the sheet metal back plate which is provided at one end with an integral stud 11 having an enlarged head consisting of spaced shoulders 12 between which a flexible washer 13 is engaged, there being a tubular fabric housing 14 surrounding the shank of the stud between the head and back plate. The back plate is terminally rolled upon itself remote fro-m the stud to form an eye 15 which receives a metal attaching loop ladapted to be secured to the tape of the garter. The eye further receives one edge vportion of a flexible lining element 17 which may be formed of leather, fabric or other suitable material, the lining element being' secured at the opposite end to the rear face of the back plate by a rivet head 18 formed on the stud as shown.

dThe material of the back plate is struck out intermediate the ends of the back plate as shown at 19 to receive loosely one side of an approximately rectangular loop 20 which is formed with an integral lever 21 on the opposite side, this lever terminating in an eye 22 formed by rolling the material of the lever upon itself. The rectangular loop 20 is formed on the ends with gudgeons 23 which receive the terminal eyes of a metal loop member 24, this member being adapt-ed to engage with its bight the stud above described and clamp the fabric of the hose to the stud. The loop member 24 is disengaged from the stud by rocking the lever outwardly as usual in devices of this character.

Formed in the eye 15 of the back plate is a slot 25 through which one end of a spring metal strip 26 is engaged and passed between the material of the back plate and the lining element. The projecting end of the strip is rolled upon itself to form an eye 27. When the operating lever is rocked to closed position the eye 22 of the lever springs over the eye 27 of the strip and locks the lever closed. The eye 22 of the. lever thus forms a grip for manipulating the lever and a locking means for holding the lever closed.

In Figs. 5 and G is shown a modified form of the device in which the back plate is formed from a single blank of sheet metal bent centrally upon'itself as shown at 28 and 29, the ends of the blank being fixed together by riveting as shown at 30 and by soldering as shown at 31, a stud 32 being fixed to the front member 28 of the back plate. Remote from the stud a tubular eye 33 is formed to receive a securing bar 84 the ends of which project beyond the ends of the eye and terminate in securing eyes 35 adapted to receive the securing threads for attaching the device to a fabric article of any kind. The back member 29 of the back plate is provided near the edges Wit-h openings 36 which likewise receive securing threads.

The remaining parts of the modied form are similar to the corresponding parts in the preferred form and may brieiy be described as a substantially rectangular eye B7 engaged through an offset portion 38 of the front member of the back plate and equipped with an operating lever 89 which terminates in a locking eye and grip 40. A loop member 4l is provided With terminal eyes 42 which pivotally engage .gudge'ons 43 carried by the rectangular eye, the loop member being adapted to engage With the stud as above described. A locking strip 44 is passed at one end through a slot in the front member of the back and is terminally equipped with an eye 45 `over which the leye of the lever is adapted to spring and hold the lever in Closed position.

What is claimed, is

A clasp including a back plate having a bearing intermediate the ends, a substantially rectangular loop having one side mounted in said bearing and having the opposite side provided with an integral lever, said lever being terminally rolled upon itself to form a combined grip and locking eye, a projection carried by said back plate terminally rolled upon itself to form an eye, said lever eye being adapted to spring' over said projection eye and hold said lever closed, a stud carried by said back plate, and a loop member pivotally connected to said rectangular loop and adapted to engage said stud when said lever is closed and to disengage from said stud upon said lever being opened.
