SHEET-FILING cumin.
Specification of Letters Patent.
"Patented Aug. 19,1913.
. App1ieation filed January 8, 1913. Serial No. 740,864.
-the like -"1n structural work requiring the dammiiig or shutting out of water from excavations or othernature of work.
The invention consists essentially of a reinforced wall embodying wooden piles and metal beams arranged in alternation, the metal beams interlocking with the wooden piles or timbers to form a substantial wall.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combina= t-ion of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a composite structure embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top View.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicatedin all the views of the drawing, by the sanfe reference characters.
Theinclosing or protective wall or structure epmprises piles or beams 1 of wood and metahl'beams 2 intermediate of the beams 1 and ihterlocking therewith. the metal beams 2 being of I form, the outer flanges overlapping thev outer faces of adjacent wooden beams and the body portion of such beams 2 coming between the wooden beams 1, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The wooden beams or piles 1 are of rectangular form and of a size so as to fit snugly between the flanges of the intermediate I beams 2. The
metal I beams by reason of their arrangement serve as ties and reinforcements for the wooden I beams 1 'and to further strengthen the wall or structure stays 3 are located upon opposite sides of the beams, 1
and 2 and may be secured thereto in any 7 manner. The stays? follow the the wall or sheet pihng.
outline of From the foregoing descnption, taken in apparent to connection with the accompanying draw ing, the advantages of the construction and of the method ofoperation will be readil those skilled in the art to whic the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with thedevice which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, 1 desireto have it understood that l the device-shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes maybe made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
The metal I beams are their lower ends by having beveled, the edges extending gle to the length of the structure.
sharpened at opposite sides at a right an- The lower ends of the piles are similarly sharp ened, the edges extending lengthwise of t e structure. When driving the piles and I beams their upperends are protected by means of a cap, the latter being indicated at 4 by the dotted lines in Fi 1. This cap prevents upsetting of the en s of the beams and piles during the driving operation.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A protective wall or structure of the character described beams and I beams having an alternate arrangement, the flanges of the I beams embracing the outer sides of adjacent wooden beams.
2. An inclosing structure or protective wall of the character set forth comprising wooden beams of rectangular form in cross section and intermediate middle I beams,
comprising wooden the latter having their flanges embracing the outer sides of adjacent wooden beams.
3. .An inclosing wall or protective structure of the character described comprising wooden beams and metal I beams alter- MORGAN A. GREEN.
