SLIDING METALLIC BLOCK-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1913.
Application filed August 26, 1912. Serial No. 717,010.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JonN Honsrmno, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Sliding Metallic Block- Binder, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a sliding metallic block binder which may be manufactured in a knocked-down condition for transportation and handling, and which may be readily assembled on the job, the clutches being slidable to fit building blocks of various sizes, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective illustrating the use of my sliding metallic block binder placed horizontally in a wall and having a single tie bar as in a thin wall. Fig. 2 is a view analogous to Fig. 1 and showing two tie bars as in a thicker wall. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the clutches in its manufactured or knocked-down condition ready to be assembled and adapted to be used with a single tie bar. Fig. 4 is. a view analogous to Fig. 3, the clutch being adapted for use wit-h two tie bars.
Referring to the drawings in detail, each clutch A is stamped from sheet metal and the details are as follows: The straight, fiat central dimension plate 1 is long enough to reach across the edge of the proposed block. The slideforming members 2 and 3 are punched up from the body of the dimension plate 1, preferably at its center. Clutching teeth 41 and 5 extend downwardly from the ends of the dimension plate 1 and at the corners, the metal between the clutching teeth being cut away, thus forming the spaces 6. The clutches A may be transported and handled in compact bundles.
The tie bars 7 are pieces of strap iron which may be transported and handled in stock bundles and cut to the desired length on the job.
The tie bars 7 are placed between the slide-forming members 2 and 3 and the members are bent down upon the tie bars so as to form sliding connections between the tie bars and the clutches. The clutches A may be moved upon the tie bars to fit the block 8 of various sizes and the clutches are placed in position upon the blocks so that the joints 9 between the blocks come in the spaces 6 between the clutching teeth 4 and 5, so that said joints may be filled.
The details of the clutches B are as follows: The dimension plates 10 are made in larger sizes to fit thicker blocks and a pair of slide-forming teeth 11 and 12 is punched up from one end of the dimension plate 10 and a similar pair of slide-forming teeth 13 and 14 is punched up from the other end of the dimension plate, so that the clutches B may be assembled with two tie bars. The clutching teeth 15 and 16 extend downwardly from the ends of the dimension plates B at the corners, there being spaces 17 betweenthe teeth.
The clutches A are to be used with one tie bar and the clutches B are to be used with two tie bars.
The tie bars 18 and 19 are applied to the clutches B in the same manner as the tie bars 7 are applied to the clutches A, and are assembled and used in the same way.
The details of construction may be varied in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention as set up in the following claims.
I claim 1. A knock-down sliding metallic block binder comprising, clutches stamped from sheet metal, each clutch comprising a flat central dimension plate, slide-forming members punched up from the body of the dimension plate, and clutching teeth extending at right angles from the ends of the dimension plate; and tie bars of strap iron mounted in the slides.
2. A knock-down sliding metallic block binder comprising, clutches stamped from sheet metal, each clutch comprising a flat central dimension plate, slide-forming members punched up from the body of the dimension plate, pairs of clutching teeth extending at right angles fro-m the ends of the dimension plate, there being space between the two teeth of each pair; and tie bars of strap iron mounted in the slides.
3. A knock-down sliding metallic block binder comprising clutches; each clutch being cut from a bar of strap iron of the desired width and consisting of a straight flat central dimension plate long enough to reach tie bar consisting of a piece of strap iron across the edge of the pressed block, slidemounted in the slides;
forming members punched from the body of the dimension plate and clutching teeth JOHN HORSFIELD' formed by cutting away the central portions -Witnesses:
