Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern Be it known that if, Bonn B. Brioon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iiittachin Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates in general to an attaching device for making one end of a rope or like article fast to an anchoring member, but the invention pertains more in particular to a device adapted to be used for hitching purposes whereby a rope, strap or the like, may be tied and untied with great rapidity.

It is of course obvious that the uses to which the invention may be put are many, and therefore the invention is not limited to an attaching device in combination with a rope or strap, but the same may be used in combination with any flexible means for holding purposes.

The principal advantage of the invention is the extremely simple manner of attaching or detaching the device to or from the rope, and as the parts thereof are extremely simple it is consequently inexpensive to manufacture.

Further advantages will appear throughout the specification and claims and are shown in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved device with a rope attached thereto. big. 2 is an edge view of Fig. i. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view designed to show the device .in an attached and detached position.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 4 is the body member havii'ig an eye 5 formed therein, through which eye a rope 6, or like article, is adapted to pass whereby the rope is secured to the body member in the ordinary manner.

The means for wedging or taking a bite on the rope comprises an oblong metal loop member 7 which in this particular instance is adapted to extend through a suitable a perture 8 in the body member f whereby the loop member 7 has a pivotal engagement with the body member. The loop member 7 is preferably off-set as shown at 9 to form shoulders 10 whereby one end of the loop member lies in a different plane from the remaining portion thereof. Au arm 1.1. is preferably formed integral with the body member tand extends at an angle to the plane of the eye for a short distance parallel to one side of the loop member 7 whereupon it is bent at sidistnntially right angles to form an off-set arm portion 1.2 adapted to oxtcml across the loop member 7 and have a bearing on both sides thereof. The arm It 1. is bent adjacent the shoulders 10 on the loop whereby the off-set arm portion 12 will lie immediately behind the shoulders 10.

The arm ll. need not necessarily be formed integral with the body member l-, but might be formed separate therefrom and secured thereto in any suitable manner. It is also obvious that the loop member 7 may be of any desired shape. The purpose of having the offset arm portiim 12 rest upon two sides of the loop being to add strength to the construction.

The manner of use of the device is as follows: Assuming that one end of the rope (3 attached to the object to be secured, such as a horse, or to the bridle of said horse, and it is desired to secure the other end of the rope to a post 13, or the like, the attaching device is passed around the post whereby the rope is bent into a loop as shown at fit by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, and then passed through the loop member 7 whereupon by bending or deflecting the rope loop to one side of the metal loop the oil'- sct arm portion l2 may be readily inserted within the rope loop which is then drawn down bringing the off-set arm portion 12 in contact with the loop member 7 and thereby a bite is obtained upon the rope which prevents slipping or any sliding movement thereof relative to the attaching device. As the metal loop member 7 is movable relative to the arm it the rope when. formed into a loop may be readily passed through the metal loop.

I. In an attaching device, the combination of a body member having an eye for the permanent attachment of rope, a loop member pivoted at one eml to said body member, and an arm rigid with said body member and angularly disposed relatively to the plane of said eye, said arm comprising an inner portion extending lengthwise of one limb of said loop member for a part of the length of the latter and an integral outer portion extending across and movable to- Patented July 8, 1913.

ward and from said loop member and having a free end adapted to be inserted through a loop of the rope passed through said loop member.

2. In an attaching device, the combination of a body member having an eye for the permanent attachment of a rope, a loop member pivoted at one end to said body member and laterally ofiset to form shoulders substantially midway of its longitudinal limbs, and an arm rigid with said body member and angularly disposed relatively to the plane of said eye, said arm comprising an inner portion extending lengthwise of one limb of said loop member and an integral outer portion extending across and movable toward and from said loop member and adapted to engage said shoulders, said outer portion of said arm having a free end adapted to be inserted through a loop of the rope passed through said loop member.
