ALANSON BROWN, 0F ROCHESTER, NEW` YORK.
Letters Patent No. 106,654, dated August 23, 1870.
BREAD-TOASTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ALANsoN Bnows', of Rochester, in the count-y of-Monroe'and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Bread-Toasters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinp,r had to the accompanying drawn ing making part of this specification, in whiche- Figures l and 2 are, respectively, front and side elevations of my invention.
This invention relates toa wire instrument for hold-4 in g bread and other articles to be toasted, and consists in such a constl'uction and arrangement of parts as that it n'iay be used both fora toasting-Mrk and a pancake-turner.
The fixed clamp A, composed ot' one or more pieces ot wire, is secured, at one end, to a suitable handle, C, while its outer extremity isjbent-7 so as to form a head ot' sufficient; width ot' ontline to' support slicesl of bread or other similar articles. y
The extreme outer section a of this head is made continuous, either curved or straight, and is drawn down thin, so as to slip easily under a pancake or simvilar article.
The head of the spring clamp B is madethe same lin form as that of A, but somewhat smaller, as shown in tig. l, and drops within the outline of the. latter, with a slight `clearance all around.
The clamp B is provided with a spring, c, which may either' be formed from the wire ot' the clamp itself, one end thereof-entering the handle C, or the elampmay be pivoted at d, and a spring applied at any convenient point, so as to retain the heads of the clamps inthe same plane, as shown in dotted lines in lig. 2. y
V'lhe rearend c of the clamp B extends over the handle some distance, so as to be within reach of the thumb of the operator, forming a. lever for opening the clamps.,
.To compel the head of B to always register within A, I provide the guides al, raised from the wire sutlcieutly far to reach beyond the utmost movement ot B.
The wires ofthe clamp B may move within or outside of these guides, as most convenient.
It will be observed that, by pressing the thumb upon the leverc, the toaster is opened to receive or release the slice between the clamps, leaving the other hand of the operator free, and'also that, either shut or open, it answers all the requirements of a caketurner.
Each of the clamps A and B is' formed from one piece of wire, and, when the springe is formed upon the latter, it is obvious that I produce a; very simple and cheap combined implement. l v
The sections b and rtf of the heads "of the clamps may be tlattened, after the instrument is completed, by a drop or trip'haunner.
The heads of the clamps may be bent in different l shapes, to suit the convenience of the manufacturer,
4as I do not intend tocontiue myself to the forln herein shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to se-` Witnesses:
WM. S. LOUGHBOROUGH, GEO. F. PARKER.
