HENRY BOYLE, OF OTTAWA, KANSAS.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed July 20, 1912. Serial No. 710,611.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY BOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nut locks and has for an object to provide means whereby a handle can be readily connected with or disconnected from a broom head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be constructed so as to positively prevent the accidental separation of the handle from the broom head.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side view of the broom. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the handle detached from the broom head. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the broom and illustrating the means for connecting the handle with the broom head, parts being shown in section and parts in full line. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking member.
The device is specially designed whereby when the bristles of a broom and the like become worn the bristle head may be conveniently disconnected from the handle and a new head substituted therefor at a minimum cost. As illustrated the head 1 comprises a member 2 and bristles or straws 3, the latter being connected with the former through the usual binders 4. Said member 2 is provided with an upper cylindrical portion 5 which is preferably constructed of wood, and as shown said portion is provided with a threaded socket 6 and a fiat surface 7 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
The handle 8 has fixed thereto a connecting member 9 such as a screw, the lower extremity thereof being extended beyond the lower end of the handle whereby it may be adjustably connected in the correspondingly threaded socket 6 of the broom head. In this manner it is evident that when the bristles or straws become worn beyond use the head canbe quickly separated from the handle and a new head substituted therefor at a very low cost. lVith a view to preventing retrograde rotation of the screw 9 in the socket 6 I provide a locking member 10 of sleeve form, the latter being secured to the lower end of the handle 8 and provided with a flat head 11 which is disposed in parallel relation with the flat surface 7 on the portion 5 of the head. The head has one or more spurs 12 stamped therefrom, the said spurs being slightly yieldable and inclined in the direction of the surface 7 so that as the lower end of the handle approaches the surface 7 of the broomhead the points of the spurs will be brought into effective contact with said surface 7 so as to have such locking engagement therewith that will prevent rotation of the handle. A releasing lever 13 is pivoted upon the central portion of the head 11, being provided with portions 1a and 15 which are adapted to travel over the spurs 12 and to move the spurs away from and out of locking engagement with the surface 7. I
From this construction it is seen that when it is desired to remove the head 1 from the handle the lever 13 can be adjusted to release the spurs 12 from their locked engagement with the head and thereby permit the latter to be rotated on the screw 9 and separated therefrom.
I claim 2- 1. The combination of a fixed member having a threaded socket, a turning member, a screw fixed to the turning member and having a portion adapted to be adjustably extended into the socket, means for holding the turning member against rotation on the fixed member, the said means including a surface on the fixed member and resilient locking spurs projecting from the turning member, adjacent the screw, and revoluble means carried by the turning member adapt ed to depress the spurs for releasing the same from the surface of the fixed member.
2. The combination of a fixed member having a threaded socket, a turning member, a screw fixed to the turning member and having a portion adapted to be adjustably extended into the socket, means for holding the turning member against rotation on the fixed member, the said means including a surface on the fixed member and resilient locking spurs projecting from the turning member, adjacent the screw, and In testimony whereof I affix my signature revoluble means carried by the turnlng in presence of two Witnesses. member adapted to depress the spurs for re- HENRY BOYLE I leasing the same from the surface of the fixed member, said means being rota-(ably \Vitnesses: mounted between the meeting ends of the H. E. MARKHAM, fixed and turning members. KATHARINE MARKHAM.
