IMPROVEMENT IN' HOISTINGJACK.
. The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and` making part of the sama 1'0 all whom it may concern-.f
Be it known that I, FRANK HoLLnNBnnnv, of Frizellburg, in the county of Carroll and State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved Hoisting Jack; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part ot' this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is a sectional elevation Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section Figure 3, a perspective -view of the upper clamp, with its curved lever; and p Figure 4, a perspective view of the lower clamp.
This invention relates to an apparatus in which the `vertical lifting-bar passes through two annular clamps,
each of which is connected with the inner end ot'a lever, whose fulcruin is in the frame that incloses the lifting-bar, the orifices in which clamps, through which the lifting-bar passes, having sides that are inclined with respect to the bar, when the clamps are at right angles to the same, and present sharp corners, by which the upper clamp bites the bar, and draws it upward, when elevated, by pressing down the upper level', and the lower clamp bites the bar, and holds it at the height to which it had beenraised, during the time when the upper clampis descending ou the bar, in order to take fresh hold, the two clamps being complementary, one biting the bar while the same is sliding through the other, and means being provided to prevent either clamp from biting `the bar, iu order toallow it to slip to the bot-tom ot'the frame, at pleasure. i
In the drawinga a u a are four wooden posts of any desired dimensions, stepped in a block, A, and mortised into a headpiece, B
b is the vertical lifting-bar, above vreferred to, which passes through a central orifice in the bead-piece B.
c is a metal plate, having four arms, (l, each of which passes through one ofthe posts a, and binds the same to thc others, the metal plate beingprovided with an orifice, through which the lifting-bar passes.
c is the upper, and
f, the lower annular clamp.
t is the upper right andlowervleft biting corners of the upper clamp, and
Im., the upper left and lower right biting corners of the lowcrclamp. i Y
h is the upper lever, which is connected by alink, 7c, with an eye, ll, whose sha-nk enters the head-piece B.
n is a handle, attached to the upper clamp e.
o is a link, which connects the lever h with thehan-lV die n in such manner that, when the lever 7,1. is depressed, the -cla|np e is made to bite the lifting-bar, and draw the same up withit, the lower clamp being at the same time canted upward so far by the pressure of the bar upon its upper left corner m as to admit of' the bar sliding through it.
'r isa bar, extending downward from the` head-piece B, passing through the plate c, and having an eye, s, at its lower extremity. f
tis a tail, projecting from the outside of the clamp j; and passing through the eye s.
u is the lower level', which is connected with the clamp f by an arm ot the latter entering a socket in the end of the former.
y When the upper lever is raised, its link o loosens the teeth ot' the clamp e from the lifting-bar, so that the clamp slides down the bar into position for a fi'esh lhe lifting-bar, on being released bythe upper clamp, is caught by the corners m of the lower clamp, and held at the height to which it had been raised. By raising the lowerlever, the lifting-baris freed from the corners m. 1f', then, thc handle n of' the upper clamp bc lowered, the bar is also freed from the corners t ofthe upper clamp, and dropslto the bottom of the frame.
Having thus described my invention,
`What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters' Patent, is'- 1. The cla-mp e, provided with the corners i and handle n., in combination with the4 bar b, link o, and lever 71 when the latter has its fulcrurn in the eye Z, or other part ot' the inclosing-frame, substantially as described. p
2. The clamp f, provided with the corners fm, and tail t, in combination with the eye s of the rod fr, or other suitable fnlcrum, the bar b and lever u, sub- Y stantially as set forth. t
3. The arrangement of the. clamps ef, lcversh lu, bar b, frame'a A B, and handle n, as specified.
Tol the above specification of my inveutionI have signed my hand this 19th day of July, A. D. 1869. FRANK HOLLENBERRY.
