WELL-BUCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10,1913.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTLETT J. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradleyville, in the county of Taney and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well- Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to well buckets and has for its object the provision of a bucket comprising a frame and an open ended cylinder mounted in said frame having its lower terminal formed with a restricted opening that is adapted to seat on a suitable plate to close the lower end of the cylinder, the bucket bein adapted to be lowered into the well and when it strikes the water, the cylinder will be raised relatively to the carrying frame so that the cylinder will be filled with water through the opening in the bottom and then by lifting the bucket, the cylinder will be returned to its seat on the plate and the water be retained therein to be dumped therefrom by lifting the cylinder relatively to the frame to allow the water to pour from the lower end of the bucket.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my improved well bucket showing the cylinder in its lowermost and closed position; Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional view showing the cylinder in a raised position; Fig. 3, a cross section of the bucket; and Fig. 4, a detail view of the lower end of the bucket shown partly in section, the cylinder being in its lowermost position.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved well bucket comprises a frame consisting of rings 1 and 2 having a bar 3 secured thereto, said bar being bent in its middle as shown at 4 to form a loop for the engagement of the well rope Q, then bent outwardly away from said loop as shown at 5 to form the bail of the bucket and the two ends 6 extended downwardly and secured to the rings 1 and 2 as shown at 7 and 8 respectively, the lower terminals of said end 6 being bent inwardly as shown at 9 and secured to a plate 10 under the lower ring 2.
11 indicate other bars connect-ing the rings 1 and 2, said bars 11 together with the ends 6 of the bar 3 comprising a frame in which is slidably mounted a cylindrical container 12 formed of sheet metal or other suitable material and having its upper and lower terminals bent inwardly as shown at 13 and 14L respectively, the upper extremity of the bucket being secured to a suitable bail 15, while its lower terminal is secured to a ring 16 having a restricted opening 17 Secured to the plate 10 is another plate or disk l1 having a disk 12* secured to its upper face, said disk consisting of rubber or other suitable packing material, said disks 11 and 12 being mounted on the plate 10 by means of a sleeve 18 inserted through an opening in said plate 10 and having an enlarged upper end 19 to engage the under side of the disk 11*, 20 indicating a bolt or other suitable fastening engaging the disks 11 and 12 and the sleeve 18 to secure said parts together. The lower portion of the sleeve 18 is slightly longer than the thickness of the plate 10 to permit a slight upward and downward movement of the sleeve and the parts secured thereto relatively to the plate and to automatically adjust the packing disk 12 to the under side of the ring 16 when the device is in operation to thoroughly close the opening 17 in said ring.
In operation, the bucket is filled by lowering it into the well, and when the bottom of the cylinder 12 strikes the water, said cylinder 12 will be floated by the air therein relatively to the carrying frame so that the water of the well will enter the cylinder through the opening 17 in the ring 16 as the bucket is lowered. As soon as an upward movement of the frame is caused by pulling the rope 4, the cylinder 12 will be returned to its normal position resting on the packing disk 12 and the disk 11 and the water will be retained in the cylinder. When it is desired to empty the water from the cylinder, the cylinder is lifted by means of the bail 15 and the water will pour out through the opening 17.
Having thus described my invention what I claim 1s l. A Well bucket consisting of a frame adapted to be secured to the well rope, an open ended cylinder movably mounted within said frame, and means to close the lower end of said cylinder.
2. A well bucket comprising a suitable frame adapted to be secured to a well rope, a cylinder movably mounted within said frame, said cylinder having a restricted opening in its lower end, and a packing disk secured to the frame and positioned to close the opening in the lower end of the cylinder when in its lowermost position.
3. A well bucket comprising a frame, an open ended cylinder movably mounted within said frame, a ring secured within the lower terminal of said cylinder and having a restricted opening, a sleeve slidably mounted in the lower end of the frame, and a packing disk secured to said sleeve and adapted to engage the ring in the lower terminal of the cylinder to close the opening therein.
4. A well bucket comprising a frame having a bar formed with a bail, the ends of said bar extending downwardly and secured to rings at the upper and lower ends of said frame, other bars connecting said rings, the plate connecting the lower terminals of the first mentioned bar and having; a central opening therein, a sleeve movably mounted in said openings and having an enlarged up per end, a disk mounted on the upper end of said sleeve, and a packing disk superposed on the first mentioned disk, a cylinder movably mounted within the frame and having restricted ends, a bail secured to the upper end of the cylinder, and a ring secured within the lower end of the cylinder and having a restricted opening, said ring being adapted to seat upon the packing disk aforesaid, when the cylinder is in its lowermost position.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
