Description

I. W. STEWART. DIAPER BIIL.
No. 106,422. Patented Aug. 16, 1870.

ISAAC W. STEWART,
0 F N wj v 0 R K, N. Y.
Letters Pater'at'No. 106,42 2, dated August 16, 1870.
IMPROVED DIAPER-PIN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I0 all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ISAAC W. STEWART, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Diaper-Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the alt to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to and consists in an improved article of manufacture generally known to the public as a diaper-pin.
igure 1 is a plan of the blank which I use to make the shield;
Figure 2 is the same when partially bent or shaped and ready for the application of the wire;
Figure 3 is a plan of theshield when finished and attached to the wire; and
Figure 4 is a plan of a diaper-pin as now made.
Similar letters of reference'indicate corresponding parts.
'Heretofin'e, the shields A for the points of, these pins have been made by first striking disks of metal up into the'shape 0f cups, then flattening them, then making a slot in the flattened side, and finally soldering them to the large ends of. the wires, as shown in fig. 4.
This operation is slow and tedious, and it is especially-objectionable to attach the shields to the sides by solder, for it is difiicult to make them adhere, and the solder makes unsightly joints. 1 therefore propose to make these shields from flat. blanks of metal,
of the character shown 'in fig. 2, by bending up the ends a and the sides b in other dies to the form represented in fig. 2, and then inserting the ends of the wire and bending the said parts of the blank down upon the wire, as shown in fig. 3, at the same time securingit to the wire (which is bent previous to. being placed in the blank) a short distance from the end perpendicular to itself, the saii'lperpendlicular part being long enough to extend across the bottom of the shield, as indicated in dotted lines at d, fig. 3.
The one part, a, and the partd are so pressed down over the wire as to hold the shield securely to it with out the use of solder.
Care is taken to have the ends of the parts a to fall short of meeting, when bent down over the wire, sulficien-tly to provide for the space f required for engaging the free point of the pin with the shield.
By this improved mode the manufactureot these shields and attachment to the pins are greatly simplitied and cheapened, the whole being accomplished by three operations, each operation being peribrmed by a press having dies specially suited to its work.
Having thus described my invention- I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of mzuinlacture, diaper-pins having the shields constructed and attached to the wires substantially in the manner described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 18th day of June, 1870.
ISAAC W. STEWART.
