O. J. OALLAHAN & E. P. CHANDLER. COMBINED CHECK PROTECTOR AND POSTAGE STAMP HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 30, 1912.

COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH c0.. WASHINGTON. n. c.
CORNELIUS J. CALLAHAN AND EDWARD F. CHANDLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED CHECK-PROTECTOR AND POSTAGE-STAMP HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CORNELIUS J. CAL- LAI-IAN and EDWARD F. CHANDLER, citizens of the United States, at present residing in the city of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Check-Protector and Postage-Stamp Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to check protectors and more particularly to a combined check protector and postage stamp holder, the object being to provide an eX- ceedingly cheap, simple and efficient combination device, which can be utilized for imparting a rough or protective surface to a check, and also to provide a convenient receptacle for carrying a limited number of postage stamps.
A device constructed in accordance with our invention can be made up in such form as to provide a convenient watch charm and furthermore the device can be made in such a way as to be susceptible for use as an advertising novelty for banks, stationery firms and other mercantile houses.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of our combination device open to permit the introduction or withdrawal of postage stamps. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is an enlarged sectional view of the lower portion of the device. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a very slight modification.
In carrying out our invention we employ a steel roller A, the surface of which is milled, serrated, stippled or otherwise roughened so that when a check is placed upon a piece of blotting paper or other yielding surface and this milled or stippled roller passed over the face of the check or rather across that portion of the check having the amount of the check marked there- Specification of Letters Patent.

on, produces a roughened or stippled surface upon that portion of the check and thereby prevents the possibility of erasing the amount and raising the check. This roller A is journaled in the lower end of a thin metal case B, which in Figs. 1 and 5 is shown composed of two sections B and 13*, the pivot C serving to not only journal the roller but also serves to pivotally connect the two sections B and B together.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the sides of the case sections are provided with slight depressions E so that when the two sections are brought together these depressions will engage each other and hold the sections fastened and in order to separate the sections we preferably construct the portion B with a slight projection B at its upper end, which can be engaged by the thumb nail for the purpose of opening the case. A bottom portion B is attached to either section B or B thereby providing a shallow receptacle which can be utilized to hold postage stamps. An eye F is arranged upon the upper end of the section B for attachment tothe watch charm. In Fig. 5 we show two such eyes F united by an elongated link F which constitutes the bottom link of the watch chain.
The device is made of such size as to provide a watch charm and as such it will always be in convenient position for use as a check protector as in order to roughen the surface of the check it will only be neces sary to place said check upon a blotter and pass the roughened roller over that portion thereof having the amount of the check written thereon.
It will thus be seen that we provide a cheap, simple and eflicient combination device capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.
What we claim is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a sheet metal case composed of two sections pivotally connected at their lower ends, and a roller having a rough surface, said roller being journaled between the lower ends of the sheet metal case, the pivot of holding said sections together and means for suspending the device as a Whole.
