TROLLEY. ABPLIOATION HLBD Huma, 191s.

WITNESSES Patented May 27, 1913.
*UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FAWCETT, OF ROCHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROLLEY.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FAwonTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolleys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to trolleys, and the primary obj ect of my invention is to furnish a trolley pole with a shiftable pivoted trolley harp that permits of the wheel of the trolley readily traveling upon a curved section of wire.
Another object of this invention is to provide a trolley that practically eliminates accidental displacement of a trolley due to curved and irregular sections of trolley wire, high speed and such other causes that are a considerable annoyance to the operators of an electric car.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive trolley that will not interfere with frogs, guard rails, hangers and other overhead construction.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the trolley partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a portion of a pole having the upper end thereof provided witha fiat semi-circular head 2 and said head has a segment-shaped or semi-circular slot 3.
Pivotally connected to the head 2 by a pin 4: or other fastening means is the bifurcated end 5 of a harp 6. The bifurcated end 5 of the harp provides clearance for the head 2 and revolubly mounted in the bifur- Specification of Letters Patent.

cation of said harp by a pin 7 or other means is a roller 8 adapted to travel in the slot 3 of the head 2.
Revolubly mounted in the outer end of the harp 6 is a Vconventional form of trolley wheel 9 adapted to travel against a trolley wire 10 or other electric conductor.
In practice, the harp is preferably made of two pieces, a center web 11 having integral side arms, and it is to this web that the inner bifurcated end of the harp is ksecured by rivets 12 or other fastening means.
As illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 the harp can swing from one end of the slot 3 to the opposite end, consequent-ly the wheel 9 can readily adjust itself to the wire or conductor 10.
The harp in its entirety is made of light and durable metal and is highly efficient in connection with high speed suburban lines.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim isz- In a support for trolley wheels, a pole, a flat semi-circular head carried by the upper end thereof and provided near its upper edge with a wide segment-shaped slot, a harp having a bifurcated lower portion mounted upon said head, means for pivotally connecting the lower end of said harp and the lower portion of said plate centrally thereof, a roller revolubly mounted in the furcation of said harp and traveling against the curved edges of said slot, said harp having its upper end bifurcated, the furcation at the upper end of a harp extending in a plane at right angles to the furcation in the lower portion of the harp, said furcation in the upper end of the harp providing means for the mounting of a trolley wheel therein.
In testimony whereof I atiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES FAWGETT.
