ALFRED SPANEY, 0F PIERMONT, AND JOSHUA. W. MAYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
JEWELRY.
Application filed June 30, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED SPANEY and JOSHUA lV. MAYER, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Piermont, itockland county, and at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in jewelry and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a watch case, or other article of jewelry with a removable section which may be readily changed in order that the article of jewelry may be made to harmonize with the apparel, or conform to the taste of the wearer.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a watch case, or other article of jewelry with a removable central portion, which may be fitted into the same at will, and will not necessitate the changing of the shape, size or thickness of said article of jewelry in order to accommodate said removable central portion.
Furtlier, said invention has for its object to provide the cover portion of a watch case, or other article of jewelry with a cut-out central portion into which may be removably secured a suitable ornamental or colored plate.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a watch case. or other article of jewelry with a remoable central portion or plate which, when fitted into same, will appear as an integral part of said case.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, our invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combina tion, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a face view showing one form of watch case constructed according to and embodying our said invention; Fig. 2 is a side or edge view thereof; Fig. 3 is a face view showing the rear of the cover section with the central removable section or plate removed therefrom; Fig. 4: is a face view showing the removable section or plate detached from its said covering section, and Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3,
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 636,192.
showing the removable section or plate in position within said cover.
In said drawings 10 denotes a Watch case, or analogous article of jewelry, provided with a cover 11 comprising a frame portion 12 having its central portion cut out at 13, and provided at the inner edge or cut-out portion of said cover with an inwardly e}:- tending rim or flange 14, which serves to form a shoulder 15 upon the inner side of said cover. Upon the rear side of said cover 11 arearranged integral oppositely extending lugs or projections 16, 16.
17 denotes thin metal plate which is preferably dished and suitably ornamented or enameled upon one side thereof. The said plate 17 is provided in its edge with a recess 18, which is adapted to permit of the projection 16 on the cover section 11 being passed therethrough when said plate is fit ted within the open central portion of said cover section. The plate 17 is beveled at one edge of the recess 18 in order to cause the edge of said plate to engage frictionally with the underside of said projection 16. At the opposite edge of said plate 17 is provided a relatively longer depression 18 which is adapted to engage with the other projection 16 of said cover 11. The said depression also has one of its edges beveled and is of sufficient length to permit of said plate 17 being rotated sufiiciently within said cover to cause the same to be properly engaged by said projections 16, 16. In order to secure the plate 17 in position within said cover section 11, it merely becomes necessary to insert the same into the rear of the cover section 11 with its ornamented or enameled side facing outward. In inserting said plate 1? the depression 18 is first adjusted below the projection 16, and thereupon the recess 18 is permitted to pass by the projection 18. Hereupon the plate 17 is given a slight turn and the beveled edges of said recess 18, and depression 18 thereby caused to frictionally engage with the underside of tl1ei* respective projections 16, 16, and thus hold said plate 17 firmly in position within said. cover section.
It is to be noted that by means of our improved construction, we are enabled to make a watch case or analogous article of jewelry with a cut-out central portion into which may be fitted disks so colored or ornamented that the article of jewelry may be made to harmonize with the garments of the wearer,
as desired. Further, by reason of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, we are enabled to attain this result without increasing the ordinary thickness of the article of jewelry to accommodate said removable, central portion which, when properly inserted, will cause the article of jewelry to appear as having a cover portion provided with an enameled or ornamented central portion which is integral therewith.
It will, of course, be understood that our invention is not limited merely to watch cases, but is applicable to other articles of jewelry, regardless of the outline thereof, which may consist essentially of a casing such as a locket, brooch, etc.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An article of jewelry having a cover section provided with a recessed central opening, retaining projections arranged upon the inner side of said cover section and extending inwardly into said central opening, and a dished removable section fitted into the recessed portion of said central opening hav ing its central raised portion in a plane with the outer surface of said cover section, and having recesses arranged in its opposite edges, each provided with a beveled portion and adapted to engage frictionally with the under side of said projections to hold said removable section in dished form, and the edge thereof in frictional engagement with the recessed edge of the central opening in said cover section, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 16th day of June, nineteen hundred and eleven.
