To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OAKLAND F. CoULTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Step-Ladders and Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification,reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices known as combination step ladders and ironing tables and my object is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and quickly'set up for use in either capacity.

A further object of the invention resides in providing a supporting means for the table, which supporting means forms the ladder proper when the device is reversed and a still further object resides in providing crossed supporting members for the table, which supporting members when drawn into position, as a ladder, permit the adjustment thereof to increase and decrease the height of the same.

.Another object of the invention resides in providing a hinged extension on the board which is adapted to form a support orthe like when the device is set up for use and still another object resides'in the provision of a heating apparatus to be removably ap plied to the opposite end of the board for heating the irons.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure '1 is a side elevation of the device set up for use as an ironing table. Fig. 2is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of the board in use as a table: Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device set up for use as a ladder. Fig. 6 is a section as seen on line 66, Fig. 5; and F 7 is a plan view of a covering for the board.

In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates an ironing table of the usual or any preferred type, which has pivoted to the under face thereof adjacent one end of the same a ladder 2, composed of side rails 3 and rungs 4 and the extreme end of the board adjacent to which this ladder is pivoted, has hinged thereto by means of an invisible hinge, the extension 5. This extension. 5 is held in its alining position with the board 1, by means of a sliding bar 6, which is slidably mounted on the under face of the board 1 and is adapted to be disposed through a keeper or the like 7 formed on the under face of the hinged extension 5 and while this extension 5 forms a portion of the board, when the same is used as an iron ing table, said extension also performs another function, which will be hereinafter and more particularly described.

The outer faces of the side rails 8 of the supporting ladder 2, have projecting therefrom, about mid-way of their ends, the pins or studs 8 which project from one of the rungs 4 and extend through slots 9 formed in the side rails 10 of an additional crossed supporting member 11 designed substantially in the form of a ladder. These slots 9 in the side rails 10 have one wall thereof provided with notches 12, said notches being disposed at the ends of the slots and midway of the ends and adapted to receive therein the projecting pins or studs 8 in the side rails 3 of the supporting ladder 2. As shown in Fig. 1, wherein the device is set up for use as an ironing table, the studs or pins 8 are disposed in the end notches or the slots 9 and the lower of the rungs or the like 13 which are provided between the side rails 10 of the member 11 adjacent one end thereof, is engaged with one of a plurality of hook members or the like 14 provided on the under face of the board 1, adjacent the end opposite that having the hinged section 5 thereon. From this construction, it will be seen that the table 1 may be properly supported by the crossed supporting members 2 and 11 to permit the same to be used for ironing purposes.

The top face of the board at the end thereof opposite that having the hinged portion 5 thereon has removably mounted thereon an iron heating apparatus 15, which apparatus comprises a plate 16 carrying a burner 17 mediately adjacent this heating apparatus, is

a sleeve board 21' and any other useful and necessary apparatus may also be provided adjacent this point, if desired.

It is understood that my device, is adapted for use as a step ladder and to this end, the

; hinged bracing connections 22 are provided,

which connect the board 1 about mid-way of its ends to the studs or projections 8 on the side rails of the member 2 and the side rails 10. have secured thereto 011 opposite side edges of the same, the transverse bars 23 and 24 which are adapted to brace said side rails as well as limit the movement thereof when brought into position for use as a ladder. The side edges of the board 1 have pivoted thereon, adjacent the end having the hinged portion 5 thereon, a pair of arms which are adapted for connection with said hinged section 5, to form a support therefor, when the latter is swung in a position as shown in Fig. 5.

The under face of one end of the board 1 is provided with a pair of sliding or shoot ing bars 26 which are operatively disposed through keepers or the like 26 and said bars are held in various adjusted positions through the medium of the set screws 27 Which extend through said keepers. These bars are provided for the purpose of increasing the length of the board when the latter acts as a support for the ladder and it is desired to increase the length thereof.

Assuming that the device is in position setup for use as an ironing table, as shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to use the device as a ladder, the first operation is to remove the heating and other apparatus removably car ried at the one end of the board. The next operation is to tilt the device until the end of the board from which the heating apparatus was removed reaches the floor, whereupon, the lower of the rungs 13 in the supporting member 11 is removed from its re spective hook portion 14 and at the same time the studs or projections 8 are removed from the particular notches with which they are engaged, as shown in Fig. 1. The member 11 is then adjusted so that said projections or studs 8 enter the intermediate of the notches 12 in the slots 9 and said member 11 is then swung to aline with the ladder 2, whereupon the rungs 13 in the former will form a continuation of the rungs in the latter. The cross bars 23 and 24 will limit the movement of the member 11 with respect to the member 2 and in order to lock these two members together, in their adjusted position, spring operating clamping members 28 are provided on the one end of said member 11. The ladder proper composed of the members 2 and 11 properly alined and clamped together may then be outspread with respect to the board or supporting portion 1, the bracing portions 22 limiting the movement thereof, and a complete step ladder is then provided, as shown in Fig. 4.

It is, of course, preferable to have some form of supporting device at the upper end of the ladder, for obvious purposes, and to this extent, the hinged portion 5 may be thrown into operation which is accomplished by the disposing of the sliding supporting member 6 to its ineffective position and the swinging of said hinged portion downwardly to be supported by the arms 25 heretofore mentioned. Should it be found necessary at any time to lengthen the ladder, the extension 26 may be effectively operated and the portion 11 adjusted so that the projections or studs 8 enter the end notches 12 opposite those which said studs enter in the view shown in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing description of the construction of my device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient device which may be quickly and readily adjusted for use as either a step ladder or an ironing table.

IVhile I have particularly described the elements most well adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

A cloth covering or jacket 29 is also provided for a portion of the board to permit garments to be readily ironed thereon and in order to secure said covering or jacket to the board, books 30 are secured to the ends thereof which are adapted for engagement with the eyes 31 mounted on the side edges of said board 1. The side edges of said covering or jacket 29 are also provided 1 with straps 32 whereby the same may be additionally secured to the board.

Having thus described this invention, what I claim is:

1. In a combined ironing table and step ladder, the combination with a board; of a ladder pivoted to the under face thereof, adjacent one end of the same, laterally extending studs carried on the side rails of said ladder, an additional crossed supporting ladder through which the first mentioned ladder extends, the side rails of said last mentioned ladder being provided with slots through. which said studs extend, the

one wall of said slots being provided with notches to receive said studs therein, hook members secured to the under face of said board to receive a rung of the last mentioned ladder, and hinged bracing arms connecting said. board with the aforesaid laterally extending studs.

2. In a combined ladder and ironing table, the combination with a board, of a ladder pivotally connected to the under face thereof adjacent one end of the same, laterally extending studs carried on the side rails of said ladder intermediate of its ends, an additional crossed ladder through which said first mentioned ladder extends, said last mentioned ladder being provided with slots having notchesin one wall thereof, to receive the studs therein, hook members carried on the under face of said board and adapted to receive a rung of the last mentioned ladder in engagement therewith, means to clamp the two ladders in alinement with one another, when the device is set up for use as a ladder proper, and hinged bracing means connecting the board with the aforesaid laterally extending studs on the first mentioned ladder.

3. In a combined device of the class described, the combination with a board; of a ladder pivoted at one end to the under face thereof, an additional ladder pivotally and slidably connected to the first mentioned ladder, spring clamping members carried on the first mentioned ladder adapted to engage the additional ladder to retain the same in alinement with one another, and hinged bracing means connecting the board with said ladder.

4. In a combined device of the class de-s scribed, the combination with a board; of a ladder pivotally connected at one end to the under face of said board, an additional ladder pivo-tally and slidably connected to the first mentioned ladder, means carried on the first mentioned ladder adapted for engagement with the additional ladder to retain the same in alinement with one an- Y other adjustable extension means carried on the under face of said board whereby the length of the latter may be increased according to the adjustment of the ladders, and bracing means between said board and said ladders.
