I 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORVILLE D. LANKFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New- York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in burglar alarms and has for its object to provide a simple and cheap device of this character which may be readily attached adjacent to a window, door or the like so that the same may be automatically sounded when the door or window is opened.
11 still further object is to provide a device of this character that may be quickly thrown in and out of engagement.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part-of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device shown attached adjacent to a door. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my device showing parts in the released position, and Fig. 3 is a'detail of the hook and engaging rod shown in an unhooked position.
This device is adapted to be attached adj cent to a door or window and comprises an automatic signal 1 provided with a casing 2 within which is held an automatic spring actuated clock mechanism 3, which mechanism is adapted to be wound by the crank 1. Extending from the lower portion of the casing 2 is an extension 5 to'which is pivotally mounted as at 6 a latch 7, which latch is adapted to be held in its released position by a spring 8, which spring is also connected to the extension 5 as shown in Fig. 2. Connected to the crank 41 is a chain 9 at the lower end of which is connected a keeper 10, which keeper is provided with an aperture 11 and is adapted to be engaged by the notch 12 on the latch 7. The latch .7 has also connected thereto the chain 12 to the lower end of which is secured a plate 13 provided at its lower portion with a hook 14: and in its central portion with a slot 15, which slot is adapted to engage the stud 16, mounted on the plate 17. This plate is held by the screws 18 to the wall below the automatic signal. A rod 19 pivotally mounted as at 20 to the plate 21, is adapted to engage the book 14. The plate 21 is securely held to the wall by the screws 22. The rod is pro vided on its end with a head 23 and is adapted to be engaged by the hook 14: on the plate 13 for holding the same in contact with the door 24.
The operation of the device is as follows :After the spring actuated mechanism has been wound by the crank 1, it is held through the chains and latch by the plate 13 engaging the stud 16. When the door is opened, the rod 19 causes the plate to be released from the stud and the spring aotuated latch releases thekeeper 10 thereby relieving the tension on the spring of the clock mechanism, and sounding the alarm. When it is desired to throw the alarm out of engagement with the door, it is necessary only to lift the rod 19 out of engagement with the hook 14: and let it swing to its lower or dotted position as shown in Fig. 1. A sliding bolt 25, mounted on the plate 26, is held to the wall and may be used to lock the door and thereby prevent the alarm mechanism from being operated. From the foregoing it may be seen that a burglar alarm constructed in accordance with my invention may be easily attached adjacent to a door, window or the like and automatically operated thereby when opened.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and'arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim as new is,-
1. In a closure controlled burglaralarm, the combination with a closure of an automatic signal including a crank; a spring actuated latch; a keeper connected to the crank and adapted to be engaged by the latch; a hook connected to the said latch for holding the signal inoperative and means connected to the said hook adapted to beoperated by the closure for unlatching the latch, substantially as described.
