WILLIAM SARSFIELI) KELLY, OF COSMOPOLIS, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR IO MARY HELEN KELLY, 0F ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON. 1.
SHOVEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM S. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cosmopolis, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Shovel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a shovel particularly adapted for cleaning material from the floors of mills, and an object of my invention is to provide a reinforced shovel having the maximum bracing effect for the least amount of material used.
The details of constructionv and combination of parts are as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the shovel; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same; and Fig. 8, is a transverse section one line 33 of Fig. 2.
The shovel is preferably made of wood and comprises a flat blade 4 rectangular in plan, the front edge of which is beveled and protected by a nose 5 having a short under beveled edge 6 and a long top beveled edge 7. This nose is preferably rigidly mounted on the blade 4, but may be removable if so desired.
In order to form a protection for the rear edge 8 of the blade 4, there is located on said rear edge and extending at right angles to the plane of the blade 4, a rear bracket 9 having a bottom bearing plate 10 extending forward, and underlying the rear of the blade 4 for some material distance. Coacting with the plate 10 and bearing Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 11, 1912. Serial No. 708,819.
Patented May 20, 1913.
upon the top of the blade 4 and attached to the bracket 9, is atop bearing plate 11. Side brackets 12 prevent movement of the bracket 9 transversely of the blade 4. Projecting forward of the blade and from the bracket 9, and resting on the top of said blade, is a bar 13, the forward end of which is attached to the bottom of a bracing bracket 14, which bracket extends parallel to the bracket 9 and has its bottom edgev on opposite sides of the bar 13 resting on and in engagement with said blade 4. WVith its lower forward edge located in said bracing bracket 14, is a handle 15, which handle extends at an angle to the plane of the blade 4 through the rear bracket 9, said bracket- 9 affording means for bracing the handle on the blade.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A shovel comprising a flat rectangular blade, a bracket extending upwardly at right angles to the rear of said blade, a bracing bracket disposed parallel to said rear bracket and fastened to the top, of said blade, means connecting said brackets, and a handle having its lower end positioned in said bracing bracket and extending through said rear bracket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM SARSFIELD KELLY.
