BUTTON-SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 8, 1912.
latcntcd illay 2%, l 5H3.
Serial No. 889,110.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Bnn'rnan J. Gems, a
Attachments, of which thefollowing a specification.
This. invention relates to attachments for curing machines and particularly to an ator disk 2; and into which opening one of the reinforcing disks may be inserted by the operator prior to the downward feeding of the button through the button guide or clamp 5.
The perforation l of the receptacle or plate A is arranged over the needle hole (3 of the. throat plate, so that the needle 7 of the machine may reciprocate through the throat. plate and sew the reinforcing disk 2 tachment for use. on button sewing machines 5 for holding a reinforcing fabric in position beneath the cloth on which. a button is bei i forcing piece 2 from the zqvcrture 4-, a trans ing sewed to the cloth;
The invention consists of the parts and the.
construction and combination of parts as; hereinafter more fully described'nnd claimed, 5
having reference to the accon'ipa'nying draw ings, in which Figure l is a. perspective view of a portion of a sewing machine with the device applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device removed from the machine. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the throat plate of the machine with the device in section thereon.
For the purpose of reinforcing fine fabric or cloth, upon which buttons are sewed, it is i desirable to apply and attach to the opposite side of the cloth from the button) a small reinforcing disk or piece 2, Fig.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a. simple attachment for sewing machines, especially but-ton sewing mach nes; the purpose of the attachment being to retain the small reinforcing piece in position beneath" the cloth on which the button is being sewed.
In carrying out this invention I employ a. thin steel or other metal plate A of suitable proportions, which may be screwed to the button guide 5 of a machine; the rear end of the plate A being slightly bowed, so that the screws 3, when screwed into the button guide of the machine, can draw the ole vice or plate A down with suiiicientpressure to hold it steady.
Preferably the attachment or plate A is of quite thin material, approximately the thickness of the fabric which is used to form the reinforcing pieces 2. There is formed in the attachment A a perforation at, which ma.
be round or other shape, as desired, accor ing to the size and shape of thecloth washer to the cloth as the button is being sewed.
For the purpose. of preventing accidental displacement of the fabrlc washer or reinverse or tangentially arranged strip 8 is at.- tached to the upper surface of the member A. This pressure device 8 operates to hold the reinforcing disk or piece 2 in place during the sewing on a. cloth of a button, which may be fed over the aperture 4t from the button clamp or guide 5.
After the button has been tlmroughly sewed on to the goods, the latter is advanced and the reinforcing piece 2 is drawn from the aperture in the receptacle A. The retaining strip 8 keeps the reinforcing fabric or material from slipping out of the hole 4: when the main fabric is placed on the feed plate A to have the button sewed on.
The operation of sewing a button on a fabric with a reinforcementmade. of a Woven fabric or other material has generally been done by hand with an ordinary needle and My invention enables the same operation to be done with a button sewing machine in a strong, neat, worl-nnanlike and expeditious manner, giving a better result at a very much reduced cost.
The essential idea of this invention is the use of av countersink or pocket or receptacle however formed, in. coiju'ziction with the button holder and needle, for holding a reinforcing disk in position so thatv the sowing of the disk, button and fabric done sin'uiltancously and mechanically.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is-- 1. The C(Jll'lllllltllilfin in a. sewing machine, of a button holder, and a reinforclug-piece holder on the same, said holder having a perforation for receiving the reinforcing piece, said holder having a portion overlying a part of the perforation and under which the reinforcing piece is-slipped and held.
2. The combination with a button sewing machine, having button holding means, of a detachable disk holder thereon having an aperture for the reception of a'reinforcing disk, and means on the holder for temporarily restraining the reinforcing disk in said aperture.
3. The combination in a button sewing machine, of a button holding mechanism, a detachable disk holder comprising a thin plate proyided" wiuiifl aperture adapted to receive a reinforcing disk and hold the same 15 in position, and a retaining plate mounted upon said detachable disk holder in such manner as to cover a portion of said aperture. V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 20 my hand in the presence of two subscriblng Witnesses.
