CHARLES A. BOWIIES, 0F RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
TICKET-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed February 7, 1911. Serial No. 607,017.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BOWLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ticket holders and more particularly to that type of devices which are adapted to dispense single car tickets, visiting cards or the like. I
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple, convenient and cheaply constructed device of this character wherein, where a ticket or card is withdrawn from the holder, another ticket or card will be presented or forced into position for withdrawal. 9
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 83 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4.4: of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the separate sections of the box which are connected together by the hinges 3 and the catch 4. Each section is provided with a forwardly extending lip 5 which is notched, as at 6, so as to provide a finger space for gripping the tickets which pass through the slot 7 formed between the separate halves of the device.
Mounted in the bottom section 2 is a pair of crossed springs 8 which have adjustably secured to their upper ends the ticket supporting plate 9, by means of the headed pins 10 which pass through the slots 11 in the springs. This plate supports a plurality of tickets 12 between the same and a partition 13 secured in the upper section 1.
The partition 13 is arranged flush with the under surface of the lip 5 and is slotted at 14 to permit the passage of the toothed wheels 15 and 16 which are journaled in an auxiliary casing 17 secured to the section 1 by lips 18 which pass through slots 19 in the top of the section 1 and are bent downwardly. The toothed wheels 15 and 16 are separated and are connected for joint operation by means of a gear 20 which" meshes with the toothed wheels and is journaled in the casing 17.
The sidesof the lower section 2 are provided with apertures 21 through which the plate 9 may be engaged by the thumb and forefinger and held down against the tension of the springs 8 while a plurality of car tickets is being inserted in the slot 7.
In the operation of the device, the case is opened and the plate 9 is held down in the manner just described and a plurality of tickets is placed upon the plate 9, taking care to leave the top ticket projected suflioiently to be grasped through the notches 6. When this ticket is pulled out both wheels 15 and 16 are operated, and when the end of the top ticket passes the roller 16, the next lower ticket will be engaged by said roller and partially projected, so that it will be ready for removal from the casing upon the next occasion. The removal of each ticket projects the next succeeding ticket below sufficiently far to be grasped.
Many modifications may be resorted to in practice, such as the use of coiled springs, etc., and all such modifications are contemplated by me as fall within the scope of the claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A ticket holder comprising a two-part casing having an intermediate wall and an exit opening adjacent one face of said wall, said wall having a longitudinal slot, a pair of spaced ejecting gear wheels mounted within one part of the casing and having gear teeth movable within the said slot, an intermediate gear wheel mounted within the same part of the casing and having gear teeth intermeshing with the teeth of said ejecting gear wheels, ticket engaging teeth formed upon the gear teeth of the ejecting gear wheels and adapted to move within the opposite part of the casing, and means for forcing cards positioned in the latter part of the casing against the said teeth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. BOWLES.
