FRANCIS BIDDLE BANNAN, OF POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ART OF PRODUCING PICTURES, DESIGNS, 0R ORNAMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed January 17, 1912. Serial No. 671,655.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS BIDDLE BAN- NAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented Briefly, in the practice of my invention, I
form the outline drawing or picture of the design upon a suitable base, such as a board, plate or the like. I then follow the lines of the picture by driving in different colored and lengths of headed studs, tacks, pins or the like, certain distances. I then fill. in the inside of the outline so made with leather, wood, paper or other material so as to make bas relief according to the thickness desired, and then cover the entire form with headed studs or tacks of different colors so as to produce the proper shape, or, if desired, studs or tacks of a single color may be painted to suit.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numeral 5 indicates a base board or plaque upon which the outline of the design is formed by driving in the outer row or series of headed studs or tacks 6. The figures thus outlined are then filled on the inside of such row of studs or tacks 6 with leather, Wood or other material 7 to form the bas relief according to the thickness desired. Preferably I employ sole leather for this purpose. The entire form is then filled in with studs or tacks of different colors to produce the proper appearance and shading.
This art is intended for both originating and copying designs or figures of any character, such as persons, animals, flowers, or indeed any picture or form which it is desired to originate or imitate.
I claim The herein-described art of producing studded relief pictures or designs, which consists in outlining the design upon a base, following the outline by driving into the base headed studs of the desired color or colors, disposing within. the outlined field a filler of suitable material to form a has relief, and then driving through the filler and into the base a mass of headed studs of the required number, colors and extent of projection to cover the field and produce the proper relief eflect and shade.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANCIS BIDDLE BANNAN.
