SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERTRAND L. PREMO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in safety razors.
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide a safety razor which w1ll embody the desired features of simplicity, durability and efficiency and which is composed of relatively few parts, and such parts are so assembled and arranged that the blade may be quickly and readily attached to and detached from the frame, as desired.
It is also my purpose to provide a strong, positive and simple means for clamping the blade to the frame when it is desired to employ a razor for shaving.
Furthermore, it is my object to provide a safety razor which may be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.
lVith the above-recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing :---Figure l is a perspective view of a safety razor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the frame or holder and handle therefor. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the frame. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the opposite side. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping bar.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the handle of my safety razor, upon which is mounted the blade holder which is indicated as an entirety by the numeral 2, said holder being constructed of sheet metal of any suitable size and dimension, and is bent at its top edge to form the upwardly extending flange 3. The lower body portion of the holder is cut away to form the elongated opening 4-, while the guard bar 5 of the holder, which also forms the lower edge of the latter is preferably made sinuous in form to give a smooth comfortable working surface. At each extremity or end of the guard bar, I provide an upwardly turned lug 6 adapted to retain the lower end of the blade when the latter is positioned in the holder. The side edge 7 of the holder is provided with small upturned retaining spurs 8-8 suitably spaced apart, and between these spurs but projecting downward in the opposite direction is a lug 9 which is notched as at 1.0 for the purpose hereinafter dcscribed. The opposite side 11 of the holder is provided with the upturned spurs 12-12, similar to and arranged in alinement with the spurs 8-8 and between the spurs 1212 is located the downwardly turned lip 13 which is stamped with a locking projection 14. It will be noted that the body portion of the holder is formed of a single piece of metal, the lugs, lips and spurs being all stamped out and bent to the form described. The blade of the razor is indicated by the numeral 15 and is adapted to be placed in the holder so that it is secured against vertical movement by the flange at the top of the holder and the upturned lugs at the ends of the sinuous guard bar and is maintained against lateral movement by the pairs of spurs at the sides of the body of the holder so that the blade is at all times firmly and stationarily held in the holder.
In order to clamp the blades in the holder, I provide a clamping bar which is shown in detail in Fig. 5 and comprises a single strip of metal 16 one end 17 of which is turned downward and carries an inwardly extending lip 18 which is adapted to fit into the notch 10 in the lug 9, while the opposite end of said clamping bar is turned downward as at 1%), said downwardly turned portion being stamped to provide a recess 20 on the inner face thereof, which recess is adapted to receive the projection 14 on the lip 13. The domiwardly turned end 19 of the clamping bar terminates in the outwardly turned finger plate 21, by means of which the bar may be manipulated to apply the same to and remove it from the holder.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing my invention will be apparent. hen it is desired to insert the blades, the latter is placed with its cutting edge in the holder, so that the extreme ends of the edge are held by retaining lugs at the ends of the guard bar, the spurs at the sides of the holder maintaining the blade against lateral movement while the inwardly turned flange at the top of the holder holds said blade against upward movement. The clamping bar is then applied as heretofore described and the razor is then ready for use. When it is desired to remove the blade as for the purpose of cleaning the razor or when applying a new blade it is only necessary to give a slight pull outward on the finger plate when the clamping bar -will be disconnected and the blade may be then removed from the holder.
It will be noted that I have provided an exceedingly simple, cheap and efiective form of safety razor, which comprises but relatively few parts. The holder with its blade retaining parts and the members for holding the clamping bar may all be stamped of one piece of metal while the clamping bar is likewise formed of a single strip. The holder is inclined at the proper angle relative to the handle, and said handlemay be secured to the holder in any desired manner.
