APPLIUATION FILED APR. 2z, 1912.

COMBINATION CURTAIN-BRACKET.
Application filed Aprii 22, 1912.
To all whom if may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK A. CHAMBER-` LAND, citizen of the United States, residing at 477 lVestern avenue, Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Curtain-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined window shade and curtain adjusters and has for its particular object to provide a device of that character whereby a shade and curtain can be simultaneously adjusted to and from the top of a window.
Another object of the present invention is to construct a device capable of doing away with all the difficulty experienced in arranging curtains in their desired position, and consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
These objects and others hereinafter described and fully set forth in the specification and claim are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of one of the improved supports and adjusters. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Similar reference numerals in all of the figures of the drawing designate like parts.
It is a well known fact when Ventilating a room by lowering a window at the top, the ordinary shades and curtains obstruct the free circulation of air, and also cause annoyance by their rattle and activity, espeeially so whenthere is to any extent a strong draft.
To avoid these objections is an object of the present invention and the same is accomplished by the means constructed as follows: f
Secured to the window frame at each side ofthe window, and preferably adjacent the top, is a guide comprising a front plate 4, angular rearward extensions 5 and 6, and the attaching portions 7, said attaching portions being provided with apertures through which the Securing screws 8 are passed. Mounted to move upon said guide, is the slide 9 having U-shaped ends 10 which are adapted to engage the side edges of the front plate 4 of the guide.
Secured to the slide 9 in any suitable manner, is a. combined shade-roller and curtain- Specification of Letters Patent.

` pole support, the same embodying a bracket 11 for supporting one end of the shade roller and a support 12 in which is adapted to be removably fastened the curtain pole, said bracket and support being attached to a carrier which is formed with a metal strip 13 having its upper end bent outwardly, then downwardly and inwardly and secured'to itself to form a head 14 to which said bracket 11 and support 12 is attached. The metal strip extendsdownwardly, preferably adjacent to the lower side of the window, and forms an adjusting 'rod for adjusting the slide and head up and down upon the guide 4, and to secure said members in their adjusted positions, the adjusting rod passes through a suitable bracket 15 which is secured to the window-frame and is Provided with a set-screw 16 by which the adjusting rod is clamped in said bracket.
To positively limit the upward adjustment of the curtains and to vary said limit at will, an adjustable stop or handle 16 is provided for the lower end of the adjusting rod, adapted upon the upward movement of said rod to engage the bracket 15. Said adjustable stop is formed with a sleeve 17 foot 18, and provided with a set screw 19 which passes through one side of the sleeve and adapted to engage the adjusting rod. To facilitate the placing of t-he slide 9 on the guide 4, its removal therefrom, and to limit the downward travel of said slide and head, the extensions 5 and 6 are differently formed, extension 6 being the full width of the guide, so that it willengage the inturned ends of the slide in moving down, and extension 5 is narrowed to allow the passing of said inturned ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In operation, assuming that the shade and curtain are in their proper positions, the handle 16 is grasped, the set screw 19 is loosened and the parts lowered or raised as desired. The extreme downward adjustment is limited by the extension 6 andthe extreme upward movement is limited by the handle 16 engaging the bracket 15. lVhen it is desired to remove the slide and curtains entirely from the window for cleaning or other purposes, the handle 16 is removed and the adjusting rod grasped above the bracket 15 and lifted, thus forcing the slide upward past the extension 5 and allowing the removal of the parts. It will be understood thatthe guides 4 preferably do not extend tor. By spacing the front plate of the guide j away from the window frame, forms an open structure which will prevent the lodg- I ment of dust and dirt and clogging of .the slide.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed is:
A device of the character described, comprising a vertically arranged guide spaced from its support and having extensions at each end7 a slide for said guide having U- shaped ends for embracing the edges of said guide and adapted to engage and be stopped i means for securing the slide in it-s adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature i'n presence of two witnesses.
