IRA SMITH, OF GRAYSLAKE, ILLINOIS.
FOOT-WARMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Grayslake, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F Oct-Warmers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in foot warmers, and has for its object the provision of means whereby an ordinary lantern may be employed as a foot warmer without danger of burning or scorching clothing or blankets employed in connection therewith.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, partially in section, of an ordinary lantern equipped with means embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line ma7 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, an elevation, partially in section, of a protecting cap employed in the construction, and Fig. t, a top plan viewof the cap shown in Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a sheet metal globe or chimney 1 provided with a covering of asbestos 2 and so shaped and formed as to be capable of substitution for the ordinary glass globe or chimney of the lantern. A protecting cap 3 in the form of a sheet metal cup and provided with an asbestos covering 1, is provided with diametrically disposed notches 5 adapted to pass over the side bars 6 of the lantern and permit said cap to be placed over the top of the lantern, as shown in Fig. l. Ventilating openings 3 are provided in the top of the cap 3 to facilitate combustion in the lantern globe.
A sheet metal stand plate 7 is provided with a segmental plate 8 secured thereto and having an upstanding segmental flange 9 adapted to receive the base 10 of the lantern. A wire clamping member is arranged opposite flange 9 and is provided with Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1912.
Patented May 6, 1913.
Serial No. 680,857.
clamping jaws 11 adapted to embrace the body or well 12 of the lantern. The outer ends of jaws 11 are brought close together and extend downwardly and outwardly substantially parallel with each other to form a guide slot 13 adapted to embrace stud bolts 14, as shown. Stud bolts 14; are provided with wing nuts 15 by means of which said clamping member may be adjusted to and secured in position to firmly clamp the lantern on plate 7, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At its outer end said clamping members is turned upwardly to form a handle 16 which facilitates the manipulations thereof.
A construction as set forth may be used as a foot warmer and will not burnor scorch a blanket or clothing coming in contact therewith. The stand plate 7 secured to the base of the lantern, serves to prevent the upsetting of the same and thus cooperates with the globe 1 and cap 3 in preventing burning or injury to the blanket or clothing coming in contact therewith.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into-effect, this is ca pable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A lantern provided with a metallic. globe covered with asbestos and adapted to be substituted for the ordinary glass globe thereof, and a metallic cap covered with asbestos and adapted to pass over the top of a lantern and provided in its sides with notches adapted to pass over the side bars of a lantern, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IRA SMITH. l/Vitnesses:
LYNNE MURRIE, RICHARD TOWNSEND.
