Specification of Letters Patent.

To all wlw/m, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PIETRZAK, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Montesano, in the county of Chehalis and State of -Vashingtom have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjusting Devices for Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for adjusting the tension of bed springs and for removably supporting the bed spring upon the frame thereof.
The invention embodies, among other features, a device which permits of t-he ready removal of the bed spring from the frame so that the bed spring can be rolled up, thus readily permitting of moving the frame and spring as separate members from one place to another, and the invention further embodies a device which adjusts the tension of the bed spring in a manner which will permit of tightening or increasing the tension of the bed spring upon the frame when the same becomes weak or sags.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bed spring and frame; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View, showing the manner of retaining the bed spring on the frame; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the members employed for adjusting the tension of the spring; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view .of the spring, looking at one end thereof, the spring having been removed from the frame.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a frame 10 preferably of a rectangular shape and composed of side pieces 11 and end pieces 12. The end pieces 12 have curved longitudinally extending bearing strips 13 secured thereto, the said bearing strips being semi-circular in cross section and a spring 14 adapted to repose on the frame 10, with the ends of the spring passing over and around the bearing strips 13 and beneath the frame 10.
The ends of the spring 14 have a series of eyelets 15 secured therein and through which are adapted to be passed suitable bolts 16, the said bolts passing through pivotally connected adjusting members 17, the said adjusting members each consisting of a bar 1S provided with a plurality of openings 19, through which the bolts 16 are passed to secure the ends of the spring 14 to the adjusting members; I preferably employ three adjusting members 17 at each end of the frame, with the two outermost adjusting members having pivotal connection with the intermediate adjust-ing member, as shown, suitable pins 20 being passed through the ends of adjacent adjusting members to pivotally connect the same7 with the said pins terminating in integral eyes 21 carrying pulleys 22, one of the adjusting members 17 at each end' of the frame being provided with an additional pulley 23 for a purpose that will be hereinafter more fully disclosed. A cord 24 is secured to one of the adjusting members 17 at one end of the frame and is extended longitudinally to the frame to pass over one of t-he pulleys on the opposite adjusting member' at the other end of the frame, after which the cord is returned to pass over another pulley on the first adjusting member and then again extended longitudinally to the frame to pass over another pulley on the opposite adjust ing member. In this manner the cord is passed over the various pulleys on the adjusting members in the manner disclosed in Fig. 2 until the cord is passed over all of the pulleys of the adjusting members in a zigzag fashion. The free end of the cord has secured thereto a clamping member 25 in- .cluding a collar 26 slidable on the cord a distance from the free end thereof and having a screw 27 threaded thereon to engage that portion of the cord on which the clamping member slides so that when the screw is turned up on the clamping member the screw willengage that port-ion of the cord on which the clamping member slides to rigidly secure the clamping member thereto.
In the use of the device described, when the cord is loose on the pulleys 22, 23, with the clamping member 25 in adjacent position, the spring 14 can be readily slipped yover the frame 10 with the ends of the spring passing around the bearing strips 13 and then if it is desired to secure the spring in tension on the frame, a pull is exerted on the free end of the cord 24, thus exerting an equal pull on all of the adjusting members 17 to arrange the spring in tension on the frame, after which the screw 27 is screwed up on the clamping member 25 to rigidly secure the clam-ping member on that portion of the cord on which the clamping member is adapted to slide, it being: thus seen that the spring will then be rigidly held on the frame and will be also held 1n tension thereon. Now if the spring should wear out or sag on the frame the clamping members 25 can be loosened and another pull exerted on the free end of the cord to take up the .slack in the spring and the cord and thus strengthen the tension of the spring. When it is desired to remove the spring from the frame the clamping member is ar` ranged to slide loosely on 'the cord so that the ends of the spring can be separated from the ends of the frame and the spring can then be readily slipped ott' of the fra-me and rolled up.
Although, for the purpose of describing my invention, I have disclosed a particular construction in the attached drawing, it will be understood that I dov not limit myself to the particular construction disclosed and that the scope of the invent-ion is defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a device oi" the class described, the combination with a frame, of a spring adapted to be supported thereon, bearing strips secured to the ends of the frame and havingt-he ends of the spring passing over the same and beneath the frame, a series of pivotally connected adjusting members having connection with the ends of the spring beneath the frame, and a cord having slidable connection with the adjusting members to connect the adjusting members at opposite ends of the frame and secure the spring in tension on the frame when a p-ull is eX- i erted on the cord.
2. In a device of the class'described, the y combination with a frame, of a spring 4adapted, to be supported thereon, bearing strips secured. to the ends of the frame and having the ends of the spring passing over the same and beneath the frame, a series of pivotally connected adjusting members having connection with the ends of the spring beneath the frame, a cord having slidable connection with the adjusting members to f connect the adjusting members at vopposite ends of the frame and secure the spring in tension on the frame when a pull is exerted on the cord, and a clampingv member carried yby the cord and adapted for rigid', engagement therewith for retaining` the said spring j in tension on the frame.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a spring adapted to be supported thereon, a series of pivotally connected adjusting members having connection with the ends of the said j spring, and means connecting the adjusting members on the ends of the spring, for eX- j ertin a pull on the adjusting members' and securing the said spring in tension on` the said frame.
