JOHN SETH, OF NORTH PLATTE, NEBRASKA.
STAY-BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed September 29, 1911. Serial No. 651,968.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN SETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Platte, in the county of Lincoln and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stay bolts.
An object of my invention is to provide a stay bolt of such construction as will prevent the crown sheet of a boiler from warping and sliding up on itself.
Another object of my invention is to provide a stay bolt which is adapted to keep the crown sheet of a boiler from warping or being otherwise displaced and at the same time be easy to attach or detach.
A further object of my invention is to provide a stay bolt which is simple and easy to manufacture and it is thought that the same can be sold at a very low cost.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stay bolt, showing my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a stay bolt. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the attachment which is applied to the stay bolt. Fig. 4 is a side view of the attachment which is ap plied to the stay bolt.
It is well known that the crown sheet of a boiler becomes very hot and in becoming so and being cooled the same becomes warped and tends to slide up on the stay bolt. My invention is thought to overcome this defect.
In the drawings I have shown the top of a boiler 1 and a crown sheet 2, the two being connected by means of the stay bolt 3. The stay bolt 3 has a head portion 4 formed thereon.
Disposed upon't-he stay bolt 3 which is screw threaded as shown at 5 is a nut 6 which serves a purpose that will be hereinafter fully described. I also provide a sleeve sheet from sliding up on the stay and it is thought that the advantages and novel features of the same will be appreciated.
I desire to lay great stress upon the simplicity of my attachment as the same can be manufactured at a very small cost.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a boiler having stay bolts connecting the crown sheet and the top thereof of a sleeve, the interior of said sleeve being of greater diameter than said stay bolt and adjustable thereon, the said sleeve having a plurality of elongated slots formed in the lower extremity thereof, and a nut mounted on said stay bolt and adapted to rest upon the upper end of said sleeve, the said nut adapted to hold the said sleeve against said crown sheet, thereby preventing the same from sliding upon said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a boiler having stay bolts connecting the crown sheet in the top thereof of sleeves slidably mounted upon said staiy bolts and nuts upon said stay bolts adapte to engage the upper end of said sleeve and hold it in engagement with the crown sheet, whereby said crown sheet is prevented from sliding up said stay bolt.
JOHN SETH.
