FREDERICK B.,I1OUCKS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR LOGATING AND RAISING SUN KEN' VESSELS.
To all whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, FREDERICK B. Lotions, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Locating and Raising Sunken Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for locating and raising sunken vessels and has for its object the provision of a device of this character which shall be of simple construction and eiiicient in 'operation.
The device consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing which is an elevation partially in section illustrating a device embodying my invention in operative position for locating and raising a sunken vessel.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises two cylindrical casings l secured to the upper deck of a vessel 2 as shown. A securing member 3 is bolted to the keelson of the vessel and projects upwardly into the bottom portion of each of the casings l, the said securing member being provided with a securing eye 4L at its upper end. A heavy cable 5 has one end connected tio the corresponding eye 4: by means of a swivel connection 6, the said heavy cablebeing coiled in the corresponding casing as indicated. The other end of cable 5 has a double swivel connection 7 with one end of a lighter cable 8 as indicated. Cable 8 is normally coiled in the corresponding casing above the corresponding heavy cable and its other end is connected by means of a swivel connection 9 with the bottom of a float 10 as indicated. The upper edge of each of the casings l is provided with a supporting and sealing Speeication of Letters Patent.

lip l1 and each of the floats 10 is provided with an annular supporting and sealing recess 12 adapted to receive said lip.
In use the cables 5 and 8 are coiled in the corresponding casing l and the corresponding lfloat seated on said casing with the lip 1l resting in recess 12 thus forming avvaterproof sealing for the exclusion of i water from said casing.
In case the vessel should sink the floats 10 will readily rise from the casings l and ride upon the surface of the water being held `to said ship by means of the lighter cables 8. Upon discovery of floats 10 the lighter cables 8 may be employed for raising the heavy cables 5 by means of which the vessel itself may be raised to 4the surface of the water. i
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a vessel, of a casing secured to the deck thereof; a float having a larger part resting on the top of said casing and a smaller part extending into and fitting the bore of said casing and forming` a liquid tight joint between the top portion of said casing and such float; a swivel secured to the lower end of such float; a small cable having one end secured to the end of said swivel; a second swivel secured to the other end of said small cable; a second and larger cable having one end secured to said second swivel; a third swivel secured to the other end of said larger cable; and a member rigidly secured tothe frame of the vessel and secured to said third swivel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK B. LOUCKS.
