WILLIAM HENRY WASHINGTON, OF ERCILDOUN, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed February 15, 1910, Serial No.' 543,922. Renewed February 21, 1913. Serial No. 750,034.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lViLniAM HENRY \Vasrnncron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ercildoun, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp chimney holders.
One object of the invention is to provide a lamp chimney holder which will be simple, strong and durable in construction, efficient and reliable in operation, and which, while being primarily intended for use in connection with a specially constructed lamp burner, may be used on any form of burner to securely hold an ordinary chimney thereon.
Another object is to provide a chimney holder of this character which may be adjusted to dilierent sizes and having means to provide for the expansion and contraction of the chimney.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp burner and chimney showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clamping or holding band showing in full lines the closed position and in dotted lines the open position of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section through one side of the chimney, one of the springs and the clamping band; Fig. & is a vertical section of a burner showing a modified form of chimney and holder; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the,
holder shown in Fig. 4:.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, 1 denotes the burner which is provided with spring chimney engaging fingers 2, in which are formed chimney retaining ofl'sets or notches 3, which are adapted to engage an annular head 4 formed on the lower portion of the chimney 5. In order to positively hold the spring fingers and notches therein into firm engagement with the chimney and thus prevent any possible danger of the latter falling or being knocked off from the burner, I provide a clamping band 6, which may be formed of a single strip of metal or which may be "formed in two sections, the ends of which are engaged with a slotted connecting block 7 in which said ends are adjustably secured by a set screw 8 to increase or diminish the size of the band.
To the free ends of the band is connected a clamping mechanism which is shown in the first figures of the drawings as consisting of a bail 9, the ends of which are pivotally mounted in apertured cars 10 formed on one end of the band. The looped end of the bail has a pivotal connection with a clamping lever 11, the inner end of which is pivotally connected to the opposite end of the band as shown at 12. The end of the band to which the lever 11 is connected overlaps the end to which the bail is connected and is slidably engaged with guide lugs 13 formed on said end, whereby when the lever 11 is swung outwardly, the ends of the band will be drawn apart and the latter thus expanded, while when the lever is swung inwardly, the ends of the band will be drawn together and the band and spring fingers 2 thus clamped into tight engagement with the chimney. When the lever 11 is thus swung inwardly a sufiicient extent to bring the pivotal connection of the bail past the pivotal connection of the lever with the end of the band, said lever will be locked thereby securely holding the band in contracted form to clamp the fingers 2 into engagement with the chimney.
At any suitable point the band is bent to form a V-shaped spring loop 14:, which will provide for the expansion and contraction of the chimney, or in other words, will permit the band to conform to the size of the chimney when in expanded or contracted condition.
In Figs. 4t and 5 of the drawings is shown a slightly modified construction of clamping band 15. In this instance, the band is shown as having formed integral therewith inwardly bent chimney engaging lugs 16, which are adapted to fit over an annular bead or flange 17 formed on the lower end of the chimney as shown. In this form of the band, the same is also provided in its lower edge with inwardly projecting attaching lugs 18, which are adapted to be engaged with slots 19 formed in the chimney supporting plate of the burner, as shown. The
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advznr tnges of this invention as defined in the nippended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a lamp burner having resilient chimney holding fingers, of a clamping band having overlapping ends and provided with apertured ears at its ends and further provided with guide lugs near one end to receive the overlapping end, a lever pivoted in the apertured ears on one end of the band, and a bail pivoted on the ears on the opposite end of the band and also pivoted to the lever beyond the ears to which the lever is pivoted.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY WASHINGTON.
