To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, FRANK G. TIIA'roI-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Harion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a nut lock and has for its object the production of an etli cient means whereby the nut is prevented from rotating upon the bolt.
Another object of this invention is the production of a nut which holds the pin firmly and without danger of any accidental removal.
With these and other objects in view, this invent-ion consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter will be fully described in the claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the nut in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a top plan. view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1.. Fig. t is a perspective of the nut showing the inclined notch in a closed position on dotted lines. Fig. 5 shows the key in the clamped engagement with the nut, and the angle in which said key normally extends. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the key.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 10 represents a bolt with threaded end 11. The outer end of said bolt is provided with cross grooves 12. The nut 13 is provided with a diagonal extending notch 15, which is formed upon the outer side which is centrally located between the corners of the nut. The key 1a which is formed from a strand of wire bent intermediate its ends to form parallel arms is placed in the diagonally extending notch 15 at which time the walls of said notch are pressed together to firmly and securely bind the key in place, as shown in Fig. 1 at 16. One end of the key 14 is bent at right angles to the body portion. This laterally extending head 17 prevents any strain upon the shoulders of the diagonally ext-ending notch 15 after said notch has been closed, since this bent portion rests squarely upon the side of the nut. After the key has been placed in the diagonally extending notch 15 and the nut 13 is threaded upon the bolt 10, the two parallel spring arms of the key 14: are placed in one of the cross grooves 12, and then bent around the bolt to conform to the contour thereof, and the end of said key terminating in an outwardly turned portion 18. This outwardly turned portion allows the key to be easily gripped and moved from engagement with the bolt when it is desired to rotate the nut.
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that since the diagonally extending notch 15 is centrally located between the lateral corners of the nut, the hammering or compression of the side walls upon the key will not in any way round the lateral corners. Since it leaves the face of the nut perfectly flat, it will allow a flat gripping surface when a wrench or other tool is used to remove the nut from engagement with the bolt.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the portions of the key are bent around the nut so as to fit between the threads thereof, and thereby be held against longitudinal movement upon the bolt.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is A nut lock of the class described comprising a bolt provided with a centrally located longitudinally extending slot, a nut threaded upon said bolt, said nut provided with a plurality of flat sides, one of said flat sides provided with a centrally located diagonally extending notch, a locking pin locked in position within said slot, said pin comprising a pair of closely fitting parallel strands being integrally connected at one end, said strands adapted to lie in said notch so as to have one strand positioned upon the top of the other strand thereby constituting a substantial rectangular structure in cross section, the sides of said notch flattened over said strand to hold said strands in a locked position against rotation, In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix iny the end of said locklng pin bent parallel signature 1n presence of: two witnesses.
