CLAMP FOR HOLDING DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1913.
Application led February 6, 1912. Serial No. 675,735.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD C. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Holding Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in clamps for holding a door:
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a simple and effective jack which may be readily attached to a door frame, window frame, stud or post and which will eifectively clamp and hold an article such as a door, shutter, sash or the like, which is being operated upon by the mechanic.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a jack which may be successfully employed for a clamp if desired.
IVith the above recited objects in view and others of a similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fitting jack constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in applied position and sustaining an article to be operated upon by a mechanic. Fig'. 2 is a top plan view of the jack, parts being' shown in section.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the improved clamp. This clamp preferably has its body portion constructed of a single piece of suitable material and comprises a substantially straightened arm 2, having its extremity arranged at an angle as designated by the numeral 3. This angular extension is provided with an enlargement or boss 4, the same, as well as the member 3 being provided with a threaded bore which is adapted to receive a threaded rod 5. This rod has one of its extremities provided with a swiveled head 6 and its opposite extremity provided with an offset handle. The numeral 8 designates a lug which is arranged upon the arm 2 a suitable distance away from the odset or arm 3. This construction, it will be noted, provides a substantially U-shaped clamp and it will, of course be apparent that the movement of the threaded rod 5, toward or away from the lug 8 will secure the clamp upon the studs or other supports of various thicknesses. The numeral 9 designates a substantially S- shaped offset or extension of the arm 2, and this offset has its extremity bifurcated to provide oppositely arranged angular members l0 and 11. The V-shaped space between the said members is adapted to serve as a wedge opening whereby doors or other work may be effectively sustained by the device.
From the above description, taken in conneotion with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought commend themselves to those skilled in the art to which such invent-ions appertain without further detailed description. y
Having' thus described the invention what I claim is A work holding clamp, as herein described, embodying a longitudinally extending arm having one of its ends arranged at an angle thereto and provided with a threaded opening, a headed threaded member engaging the opening, the said arm being further provided with an inturned lug and being extended outwardly and rearwardly from the said lug and terminating in a substantially V-shaped end.
In testimony whereof I aihx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD C. MITCHELL.
