UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES QCHEER, OF SILVERTON, COLORADO.
ATTACHMENT FOR FIRE-NOZZLES.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Scrmnn, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Silv verton, in the county of San Juan and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Fire- Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for fire nozzles, and it has for its object to pro vide simple and improved means whereby pure fresh air from the immediate vicinity of the stream issuing from the nozzle may be gathered and utilized for the consump tion of the firemen operating or manipulating the nozzle, thereby enabling life to be sustained in places that would otherwise be inaccessible on account of smoke and impure air.
A further object of the invention is to produce asimple and effective device of the character described wherein the air gathering and projecting device is operated by a motor actuated by the stream issuing from the nozzle.
With these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in section.
Corresponding parts in the several. figures are denoted by like characters of reference The improved device comprises a bracket or supporting member 1 adapted to be connected by means of clamps 2, 2 with a nozzle 3 of ordinary construction, said bracket supporting a casing C containing a middle com-- partment 4 and side compartments 5, 5. A shaft 6 extending transversely through the casing supports within the compartment 4 a Specification of Letters Patent.

water wheel 6 of the ordinary paddle or bucket type, the paddles or buckets of said wheel, indicated at 7, being disposed in the path of the stream issuing through the nozzle 3. Supported on the shaft 6 within each of the compartments 5 is a fan or blower 8 of suitable construction. The side compartments 5 of the casing are spaced from the middle compartment, and the inner side walls of said side compartments are provided with inlet apertures 9 lying adjacent to the stream that issues from the nozzle 3. The side compartments 5 are provided with upwardly extending contracted portions or hoods 10 each having an outlet pipe 11.
In the operation of this invention, the motor actuated by the stream issuing from the nozzle serves to actuate the fans or blowers whereby air gathered from the immediate vicinity of the stream is projected through the outlets 11 from which it may be guided to a firemans helmet or mask to be utilized for respiration. No limitation is made with regard to the manner of conducting and utilizing the air gathered and projected by the improved device, as this may be done in a great variety of ways.
Having thus described the invention, whatis claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a portable fire nozzle, of a motor actuated by the stream issuing through the nozzle, a fan operated by the motor, and a fan casing having an inlet adjacent to the stream and a suitable outlet.
2. The combination with a portable fire nozzle, of a casing having compartments, a water wheel in one of the compartments having buckets disposed in the path of the stream issuing from the nozzle, and a fan in another compartment actuated by said water wheel, the fan containing compartment being provided with an inlet adjacent to the stream issuing through the nozzle.
3. An attachment for fire nozzles comprising a bracket, a casing supported thereby and having separate compartments, a shaft extending through the several compartments, a water wheel on said shaft within one of the compartments, and a fan on said shaft within another compartment, the inner wall of the fan containing compartment being provided with an air inlet.
4. The combination with a fire nozzle, of an attachment comprising a bracket, a casing supported thereby and having an intermediate and side compartments, said com- Walls of said compartments being provided 16 partments being slightly spaced apart, a with air inlets.
