WILLIAM J. F. MAIDHOF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PRINTING-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 11, 1913.
Original application filed October 6, 1909, Serial No. 521,355. Divided and this application filed August 19,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. F. Memnor, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Bronx, in the clty and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing- Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing forms with the object in view of providing novel means for supporting the bases of the type blocks whereby a clearer and more preclse printing effect may be obtained.
Another object is to provide novel means for firmly securing and adjusting the type blocks in the printing frame or chase.
A further object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the various parts whereby the above-mentioned objects may be more effectively carried out.
A practical embodiment of myunventlon is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of the printing form with a series of type blocks secured therein, Fig. 2 represents, an edge view of the same, Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 represents a section taken in the plane of the line BB of Fig.1.
The printing frame or chase comprises side members 1 2, and end members 3, 4, secured together by screws 5. This frame is provided with aback plate 6 secured thereto by screws 7.
The printing frame is shown in the present instance as rectangular in form. The two opposite side members 1 and 2 of the frame are provided with undercut grooves 8 fitted to receive the dove-tailed tongues 9 of the adjustable spacing bars 10, for holding the spacing bars in sliding engagement with the frame. These spacing bars are provided at their top with lateral extensions 11 fitted to engage the recesses 12 1n the type blocks 13 for holding the type blocks against removal from the frame with their bases against the back plate 6.
Centrally arranged lugs 14, 15, are secured to the members 1 and 2 by screws 16, which lugs form bearings for the inner ends of adjusting screws 17, in the present instance four in number, the outer ends of which screws are mounted in the end mem- Serial No. 644,946.
bore 3 and 4 of the frame. These screws pass through and have a screw threaded engagement with the adjustable spacing bars 10 whereby the rotation of the screws will slide the adjustable spacing bars toward or away from each other. These adjusting screws are provided with the enlarged portions 18, having holes therein adapted to receive a spanner or other convenient tool.
In operation, the adjusting screws are rotated so as to separate the spacing bars far enough to permit the insertion between them of the type blocks 18. The type blocks are arranged in their desired relative position with respect to each other and the ad justing screws are then rotated in the reverse direction thus forcing the spacing bars toward each other and clamping the type blocks firmly in position therebetween with the bases of the type blocks resting on the back plate.
It will be seen that a great variety both in number and size of type blocks may be used in connection with my apparatus and that any desired relative adjustment of the type blocks may be obtained. Furthermore, the fact that the chase or frame is provided with a back plate on which the bases of the type blocks rest provides a very firm and unyielding printing form with the result that the characters upon the type blocks are printed upon the desired material in a clearer and more precise condition than has heretofore been obtainable.
It is to be understood that by the term type blocks any printing block is included. It is also evident that various changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure here in set forth, but
What I claim is l. A printing form comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, adjustable spacing bars and interposed lugs carried by the chase and adjusting screws pivoted in the lugs and chase and having a screw threaded engagement with the adjustable spacing bars for moving the bars toward and away from each other.
2. A printing form comprising a chase or frame composed of a back and side and end members secured thereto, a pair of adjust able spacing bars having their ends slidably mounted in the side members, interposed fixed lugs and adjusting screws engaging the end member and said fixed lugs for moving the adjustable spacing bars toward and away from each other.
3. A printing form comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, an adjustable spacing bar, fixed lugs and a pair of adjusting screws pivoted in the chase and lugs and having a screw threaded engagement with the adjustable spacing bar for moving it toward and away from the fixed lugs.
4. A printing form comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, spacing bars and interposed fixed lugs and a pair of adjusting screws pivoted in the chase and fixed lugs and having a screw threaded engagement with one of said spacing bars for moving it toward and away from the other spacing bar.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this sixteenth day of August 1911.
