e5 ATTORNEY.
FREDERICK W. WOOD, OF KANSAS CITY,
PIANO PLAYER COMPANY, OF KANSAS SOURI.
MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE BERRY-WOOD CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MIS- SNARE-DRUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1913.
Application filed April 13, 1911. Serial No. 620,856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK \V. 7001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snare- Drums, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in snare drums.
My invention is particularly adapted for use in automatic musical instruments, and its object is to conserve space and to improve the sound of the drum.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, as applied to a snare drum, Figure 1 is an elevation, a portion of the beater or drum stick being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, the section being on the line (6-7) of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters denote similar parts.
The numeral 1 denotes the head of a beater or drum stick, the handle 2 of which extends through a hole 3 in the side of the body 1 of a snare drum, the hole 3 and beater 1 being located between the drum head 5 and the snare head 6 of the drum. The beater head 1 is preferably disposed so as to strike the inner side of the snare head 6 directly opposite the snares T, which, as usual, are disposed upon the outer side of the snare head.
8 denotes any suitable mechanism for rapidly moving the beater handle 2 so as to cause the beater head 1 to strikethe snare head 6, preferably by vibratory movement of the handle 2 and head 1. The mechanism 8 may be automatically operated by any of the well known devices employed for such purposes.
By locating 2 between the the beater head 1 and handle heads 5 and 6, considerable space is conserved. This is import-ant in structures of this character. By having the beater located between the heads, so as to strike the snare head directly opposite the snares, the strength and volume of the sound is increased and the tone and effect is improved, as compared with the usual construction in which the head 5 is struck and the snare head vibrated by the air pressure.
Modifications of my invention, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a drum having a hole in the side, of a vibratory beater extending through the hole and adapted to strike the inside of one head of the drum.
2. The combination with a snare drum having a hole in the side, of a vibratory beater extending through the hole and located so as to strike the inner side of one head.
3. The combination with a snare drum having a hole in the side, of a vibratory beater extending through said hole and disposed so as to strike the inner side of the snare head opposite the snares.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK WV. VOOD.
