Be it known that- I, GLENN KELSE'Y. a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinzua. in the county of \Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Bangs,
of which the following is a specification,
adapts the bung for use in relieving and testing the pressure in barrels or similar receptacles containing gasolene oil or smnlar fluids with a very small waste of the thud or gas.
The invention also aims to generally iinprove this type of bungs to render them more efficient and commercially desirable.
\Vith these and other objects in view as will be more apparent as the description proceeds the invention consists in certain new constructions and arrangements of parts that shall be l'iereinat'ter fully described and claimed.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my bung: and l ig. 2 is a vertical section. i
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desig nated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, l designates the hollow cylindrical body portion of the bung,having at one end the annular flange 2 and the square head 3. The body is externally threaded at -l for securing it in the barrel and internally threaded as at 5 for the reception of the plug valve (3. Thisvalveconsists of an externally threaded sleeve 7 somewhat longer than the body 1, having its lower end closed by the disk 8 and asquare head $l-formed about its upper end. This head is internally threaded t0 deceive the plug 10 which prevents dirt collecting inthe sleeve. The sleeve is pierced at its lower end slightly above the disk 8, with a plurality of transverse openings 11. v(lrooves 19 and '13 are formed in the-body l and valve stem 7 respectively and are adapted to receive washers 'l-l.
To operate my improvement, the bung being positioned in the barrel, proceed as follows: When it is desired to completely close the barrel, draw the upper face of the disk 8 tightly against the bottoin edge of the body'l by turning the valve with a wrenchl This closes the openings 11, shutting ott communication from without. By turning the valve backward the disk 8 is removed the ports 11, sothat any excess of pressure within the barrel may escape'via said ports and the bore of the sleeve 7, the plug 10 having been previously removed. Similarly when the barrel is to be filled or emptied the valve is opened as 'nreviously described may be. To test the pressure in the barrel or other receptacle containing gasolene, oil or other fluids remove the plug 10 and screw a pressure gageinto the head 9. Then turn the valve backward opening the ports 11 and allowing the pressure within to act on: the gage. llaving taken the pressure close the valve. unscrew the gage and insert the plug 10. This test may be made with but a slight loss of gas.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and eflicicnt valved bung which obviates the necessitvot removing the'bung from the barrel to equalize the pressure within and without and which permitsthe internal pressure to be easily ascertained.

i A barrel hung. the combination of a bushl ing adapted to be dctachably secured within 5 a barrel, the said bushing being provided with a threaded bore, a valve member. said valve member comprising a disk plate. a tubular slccvc extending from said plate and tormcd intcgral therewith. the outer pcriph cry of said sleeve being threaded and adaptcd to rest within the threaded bore of the lmshiug. the tree end of said sleeve being squared and extending beyond said bushl ing. said sleeve having a bore formed therein from contact with the body 1, thus opening so that air may flow out or in as the case.
Having thus described the invention what rou ed, a plug adjustably mounted Within said Washer carried by said sleeve and adapted of reduced diameter adjacent its outer end and the said reduced portion being thread described.
