Description

O. F. HYDE.
MEDICINE DROPPER.
' APPLICATION EILED MAY 14, 1912.
WITNESSES Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
INI/E Charles Hy momvsrs CHARLES FISHER HYDE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MEDICINE-DROPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 14, 1912. Serial No. 697,227.
Patented Mar. 4, 191 3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. I'IYDE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have. invented a new and Improved Medicine-Dropper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to dropper-s for liquids, and especially to bottles adapted to contain medicines from which the same may be dropped easily and accurately.
The object of the invention is to provide a bottle of the special nature indicated which is more efiective for its purpose than those commonly employed and which will be substantially airtight when not in use as a dropper so that the contents of the bottle will be properly preserved.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompany; ing drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical face view of the bottle made in accordance witha preferred embodiment of this invention; Fig. 2 is a verticalsection through the neck of the bottle substantially on the line 22 of Flg. 1; and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the movable parts in a different position.
Referring particularly to the drawings, I have shown at 10 any suitable form or size of a container for liquids, hereinafter referred to as a bottle, but which obviously may be a ju or some other speclfic type of container. gaid bottle is shown provided with a neck 11 adapted to be closed. by a cork 12 in the usual manner.
The interior surface of the neck 11, adjacent the mouth, is formed wlth a long1tudinal roove 13 through which, when the bottle is tilted, the med cine may be caused or permitted to flow in drops. Topermlt this action the stopper may be withdrawn slightly if it had been previously forced so deeply into the neck as to make the bottle air-tight. To facilitate the flow of the liquid through the groove 13, the stopper 12 ma be formed with a companion groove 14 which may be caused to register with the bottle groove as indicated in Fig. 2. Whether or not the stop er must be specially formed as indicated will of course, depend upon the viscosity of the liquid or the rate at which it is to be delivered from the bottle.
On the side of the'neck .11 opposite the groove 13 is formed an external longitudinal rib 15 which merges into the rim 16 surrounding the mouth of the bottle. Said rib 15 serves to reinforce the bottle neck and to provide a substantial base for a comparatively long inclined vent 17 extending entirely through the wall of the neck, the inclination of said vent being down toward the inside of the bottle. The purpose-of this vent 17 is to admit air during the operation of dropping medicine or the like from the bottle through the groove 13, as described above. dropper, I prefer, to seal the vent 17 by means of a flat elastic band 18 surrounding the neck of the bottle and adapted to' slip over the outer end of said vent, as shown in Fig. 3, the band, however, being adapted to be slipped up-or down so as to open the vent as may be required. When the band is moved away from the vent, the admission of air may be controlled more or less, as desired, by the operators thumb or finger, the form of the neck with respect to the rib facilitating such action of the operator.
I wish it to be understood that I am not to be limited to any particular materials, or relative sizes and proportions of the parts or features of this invention, reserving the right to vary from those shown to a consid- \Vhen the bottle is not used as a 1 erable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a medicine dropper, the combination with a bottle having a neck provided with a longitudinal groove along its inner surface adjacent the mouth, a longitudinal rib on the outside of the neck opposite said groove, and a downwardly and inwardly in.-
clined vent extending through said. rib and neck, offlmeans slid'able up and down on the 5 neck and rib to seal' said vent, substantially asset forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscrlbing witnesses.
GEORGE L. HAGADONE, GEORGE E'RVIN KAMM.
