Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS A. SoHLnoi-i'rnR, citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarf-Pins, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in scarf pins and the object in the present instance is to provide a device of this character with means for easily removing and replacing the stone or jewel from the mounting.

The invention consists of a pair of plates slidably arranged one on the other, and each of which is provided with a pair of jewel securing prongs, and the arrangement is such that stones of varied size and shape may be secured in the mounting. I

The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the mounting with the stone removed, but its position being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 1s a rear elevation of the mounting, with the pin and spring removed to more clearly show the parts.

The numeral 1 designates the rear plate which is formed with an ear 2 at its upper end, to which car a stick pin 3 is secured. This plate 1 is also formed with an aperture 4 near its upper end and with an open end slot- 5 at its lower end.

The numeral 6 designates the front plate, which rests on and is adapted to slide against the surface of the rear plate 1. This plate has an ear 7 pressed from its body at about the center, and this ear, when in posltion, passes through and travels in the opening 4 of the plate 1. The plate 6 is also formed at its lower end with a rearw'ardly bent tongue 8 adapted to travel in the slot 5 and this tongue is formed with side projections 9 which tend to keep it in position against the rear plate. Each plate is provided with two prongs 10, the rear plate having the prongs at the lower end and the front plate having them at the upper end; these prongs are adapted to secure and hold a suitable stone or jewel 11.

Interposed between the ears 2 and 7 is a coiled spring 12 which surrounds the pin 3; this spring tends to draw the upper and lower prongs toward each other to firmly grasp the stone. It is evident that to place a stone in position, or to remove it after it has been so placed, it is merely necessary to slide the plates so that the prongs will move away from each other, which movement will compress the spring, and the stone is placed in position. The release of the plates will cause the spring to draw the prongs securely against the edge of the stone and securely hold it. It is also evident that with device, stones of varied size, as well as of varied contour may be engaged and that the stones may be removed and replaced with ease.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a scarf pin the combination of a pair of plates slidably arranged on each other, each of which is formed with a rearwardly projecting car, a pin secured to one of said ears and passing through the other, and a coiled spring located between the ears and surrounding the pin, each of said plates having a pair of prongs, between which pairs of prongs a stone may be secured.

2. In a scarf pin, a rear plate formed with a rearwardly projecting ear at its top, an opening near one end and an open end slot at the other end; a pin secured to said car; a coiled spring seated against the ear and surrounding the pin; a front plate formed with a tongue adapted to travel in said slot, an ear formed on said front plate and passing through said opening, said ear adapted to bear against one end of the spring; each of said plates having a pair of prongs at its outer end between which pairs of prongs a stone may be engaged.
