ilh'llllllll ti hill ljtel Tl LARKIN S. BLAKE. OF SULPHUR SPRINGS, GEORGIA.
LAMP-BURNER.
Application filed January 24, 1912.
To (l/1 whom it may concern.
3e it known that I, LARKIN S. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sulphur Springs, in the county of Dade and State of Georgia have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a. combined burner and lamp chimney, the object of the invention being to provide means for positively preventing the chimney from accidentally falling from the burner as the lamp is carried from place to place.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securely holding the lower edge of the chimney against the bed or base member of the burner so as to seal the joint between the chimney and the bed member to prevent the ingress of air at this point and thereby prevent the chimney from becoming suddenly chilled along any of its point of contact with the base member.
Another object of the invention is to provide such holding means which will permitof the expansion and contraction of the chimney under heat changes.
In the drawing forming part of this application and in which like numerals of reierence indicate similar parts'in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the burner. Fig. 52 is a vertical section therethrough showing the application of the chimney thereto.
The burner comprises a base member 1 which is provided with a central wick tube 2. The head 3 of the base member is perforated at points adjacent to the wick tube and as shown the said burner is provided at-a point outwardly of the head 3 with art-annular bed t which has one ot its walls extending directly into the outer horizontal flange 5 as shown. The .aid burner is provided with a plurality of chimney retaining tongues or springy jaws 6 which are prefers ably formed of fiat sheet metal. These jaws are curved inwardly at 7 and then outwardly at 8 so as to provide the usual upper guiding surfaces to facilitate the engagement of the chimney-to the burner.
The chimney 9 has its lower walls provided with an annular groove 10 having a horizontally disposed shoulder 11 against Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 673,148.
which the auxiliary tongues 12 are adapted to engage. The tongues 12 are stamped from the tongues 6 and under their inhercnt elasticity they are adapted to yieldingly bear against the shoulder 11 so as to force the lower edge of the chimney intoclose contact with the flange .3 of the burner whereby the joint between the base of the chimney and the flange 5 is sealed or sufiiciently closed to prevent the ingress of air at this point. By preventing the iilgTtiSSJOf air at the point between the flange 5 and the base of the chimney 9 it has been found that thechimney is held guarded against becoming suddenly chilled and liability of the chimney becoming broken through exposure to sudden heat changes is reduced to a minimum. The channel 10 in the chimney is relatively deep, the auxiliary tongues 12 being only engaged with the horizontal flange or wall 11 of said channel whereby to permit of the expansion of the chimney under heat changes.
The construction of the device described herein 'is such that the chimney can be readily applied to the burner and associated with the auxiliary tongues 12 so as to positively prevent the accidental tilting of the chimney on the lmrncrduring the act of carrying the lamp. By slitting the jawsfi as at 152 the auxiliary tongues 12 are provided with the relatively long resilient lower portions 13.
I claim j A burner having a .tlange, spring sheetmetal tongues mounted upon theburner and extending upwardly therefrom at points outwardly of the said flange, a chimney removably mounted upon the burner, and auxiliary tongues stamped from the first tongues, said auxiliary tongues extending inwardly at right angles thereto and thence inclined upwardly and outwardly disposing the terminal end thereof partially within the slot formed by the stamped out auxiliary tongues.
ln testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
