CIGAR-WBAPPER-CUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
Application iled June 4, 1912. Serial No. 701,633.
To all whom t may concern VBe it known that we, LOUIS ZEEMAN, GEORGE F. FLAD, and ABRAHAM lVILsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Vrapper- Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to machines for cutting wrappers for cigars, the purpose being to provide a reversible and double edged cutting knife to admit of a right or a left hand wrapper being cutfrom a leaf and to further provide a reversible table having a portion perforated and extending over a suction chamber by means of which the tobacco leaf is held in place during the cutting of the wrapper or binder therefrom.
rIhe invention relates to' the variety of cigar wrapper cutting machines having a perforated bed piece, a suction chamber below the perforated part of the bed piece, a knife adapted to project through and above the bed piece, and a roller to pass over the leaf and effect a cutting thereof to form the cigar wrapper or binder.
The invention further contemplates novel means for operating the cutter and the valve whereby a partial vacuum is created in the suction chamber to hold the tobacco leaf upon the bed during the cutting operation.
They invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set, forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of a machine of the character invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the suction chamber on the line xof Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the suction chamber and bed, showing the latter adjusted for cutting a right hand wrapper. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the bed adjusted for cutting a left hand wrapper. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the double edged knife or cutter. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the cutter, showing a portion of the rod to which it is attached. Fig. 7 is hereinbefore stated embodying the a sectional detail of a portion of the suction chamber and bed on the line g/-g/ of Fig. 4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in ythe following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The machine comprises a stand 1 which may be of suitable construction. A table 2 and suction chamber 3 are mounted upon the stand 1, the suction chamber being closed at its top by means of plates 4 and 5 which constitute the bed piece or platen of the machine' upon which the tobacco leaf is placed when cuttingthe wrapper or pointer. An opening 7 is had in the bed or platen to receive the cutter or knife 6, which latter is double edged and reversible. The opening 7 is in line with the joint formed between the opposing edges of the plates 4 and 5. One of the plates has a portion provided with a plurality of minute openings S, the perforated portion being wholly to one side of the knife opening 7.
The platen or bed is reversible, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, to admit of a right hand or a left hand wrapper being cut from a leaf of tobacco. When the bed or platen is in position it is secured to the suction bo-X 3 by means of fastenings 9, which may consist of machine screws.
The suction chamber 3 may be of any construction and is usually of boX form. A pipe 10 connects with a side of the suction chamber and is provided in its length with a butterfly valve 11, which is under control of the operator so that it may be opened when it is required to create a suction in the chamber 3. The pipe 10 connects with a flue 12 in which a' suction is maintained in any manner well understood in the art. A spring'13 is provided to normally hold the valve l1 closed. A rod 14 connects an arm of the valve 1l with a treadle 15 to admit of the valve being opened by pressure of the foot of the operator.
The knife 6 may be of any outline depending upon the required shape of the wrapper or binder to be cut and conforms to the opening 7 through which it is adapted to operate. The knife is formed of a strip of steel of uniform width throughout its length and both edges are sharpened, thereby admitting of either o-ne of the edges being brought into operative position so as to project above the bed or platen. The knife 4is reversible so that a right or a left hand wrapper or binder may be cut from a leaf. The knife may be supported and operated in any manner and as shown rods 16 have their upper ends attached to the knife 6 by means which will admit of the knife being readily disconnected from the rods when it is required to reverse or to replace the knife by a new one or by aknife of different size or shape. The rods 16 operate through stuffing boxes 17 located in openings formed in the bottom of the suction chamber, thereby maintaining a close fit while at the same time directing the knife in its vertical" movements. The lower ends of the rods 16 are connected with arms 18 extending from a rock shaft19 mounted in brackets 2O pendent from the table 2. A rod 21 connects an arm 22 of the rock shaft 19 with a treadle 23. Under normal conditions the edge of the knife or cutter 6 is about flush with the bed or platen and when pressure is' applied to the treadle 23 the knife is projected slightly above the bed or platen.
Al roller 24 of any construction and mounted in any manner is adapted to pass over the leaf and cut the wrapper therefrom. As shown the roller 24 is carried by means of a pivoted arm 25. The operation of the roller 24 is well understood in the operation of the machines of which the present invention is a type. When the roller 24 is moved to one side of the platen a 7tobacco leaf is placed in position upon the platen, after which the treadle 15 is operated to open the valve 11, which results in creating a suction in the chamber 3,v thereby drawing' the leaf upon the platen and retaining it in place. The treadle 23 is now op# erated to project the edge of the knife above the platen, after which the roller 24 is passed over the platen to press the leaf against the cutting edge of the knife, with the result of separating the cigar wrapper or binder from the leaf in the manner well understood. When it is required to cut right hand wrappersthe knife and bed are adjusted to the position about as shown in Fig. 3 and when left' hand wrappers are to be cut the parts are adjusted to the position indicated in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the'principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood thatthe device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made `when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In a machine for cutting cigar wrappers, a double edged cutting knife adapted to be reversed to admit of cutting a right or a left hand'wra-pper or of bringing a lsharpened edge into working position when the edge in use has become dull.
2. In a machine for cutting cigar wrappers a platen having a knife opening and adapted to be reversed, and a reversible knife having a double cutting edge and adapted to be arranged with either onev of ,its edges extending through the knife opening of the platen. v
3. In a machine for cutting cigar wrappers, a suction chamber, a platen closing the top of the suction chamber and having a knife opening and a portion at one side of the knife opening perforated, said platen being reversible, and a reversible knife arranged to operate through Vthe knife opening of the platen.
` In testimony whereof we afix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS ZEEMAN. GEORGE F. FLAD. ABRAHAM WILSON.
