AUTOMATIC CUT-OFF FOR MEASURING-PUMPS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Annex A. Bowsnn, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Cut- Ofi's for Measuring-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic cut-ott for measuring pumps and more particularly to the type of pump described and claimed in the application of H. M. Bowser and Allen A. Bowser filed in the United States Patent Office on or about February 13, 1907, Serial No. 357,125, and also in an app,lication filed by me on or about April 29, 1907, Serial No. 370,996, to which applications reference may be had for the parts not specifically described in the present application, and the primary object of this invention is to provide improved means for automatically cutting 0ft or stopping the action of the pump to prevent the pump from drawing or umping air when the supply of liquid has een exhausted.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, cheap and durable in construction, adapted to be readily applied to the pump and effective and eflicient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, will appear, the invention consists in the "features of novelty in the construe tion, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating an exemplitlcation of the invention and in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a pump having this improvement applied thereto, constructed in accordance with the princi les of this inventitm. a casing 11 and in which casing is mounted the operating mechanism for the pump, and said operating mechanism comprises a sectional shaft, the sections 12, 13 of which are connected by clutch members 14:. Mounted upon the section 13 is pulley 15 and secured to the section 12 is a pinion wheel 16, which latter meshes with and drives a suitable gear 17 when the clutch members 14 are in operative posit-ion to connect the sections 12 and 13 of the shaft. The gear 17 is provided on its rear face with cams 18, 19 and said gear 17 is rotatably mounted upon a suitable axle 20, shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The numeral 21 designates a dial or indicator which is provided with peripheral teeth 22.
Slidably mounted in the casing 11 and upon a suitable support is a block or member 23, to which is pivotally connected by one end an operating pawl 24, the extremity 25 of which is adapted to engage and rest upon the peripheral teeth 22 of the dial or indicator 21, and 26 designates a retaining pawl also adapted to engage the peripheral teeth 22 to hold the dial or indicator against retrograde motion when the operating pawl 24 is returned to its initial position; and 27 designates a suitable handle for releasing the pawl 24. The member 23 is provided with a laterally projecting lug .or pin 28 adapted to be engaged by the cam 18 to raise the member and the pawl 24 and by the cam 19 to lower the member and pawl 24.
The dial'or indicator 21 is provided with a projection 29 extending from the rear face thereof, the extremity of which is adapted to engage one end of a locking pawl 30, which latter is pivotally supported as at 31. and is provided with a projecting portion 32.
The numeral designates a clutch operating member and said member 33 is controlled by an arm or lever 34 which is pivotally supported intermediate its ends as at 35. One extremity of this arm or lever 34 is connected to the clutch operating member 33 by means of a bar or member 36, and said bar or member 36 has a pivotal connection 37 with the arm or lever 34. A suitable flexible member 38, such as a coil spring or the like, is provided for normally holding the clutch operating 3. in a position to hold the clutch 14; in an inoperative position to disconnect. the sections 12, 1-? of the shaft. A suitable piston 48 is arranged to move within the cylinder 46 and connected to said piston 48 is a piston lOtl 4-2) which projects through suitable aperture in the top 50 of the cylinder and also through a suitable tubular member 51 arranged to communicate with the aperture in the top of the cylinder. A shoulder or projection 52 is provided near the upper extremity of the piston rod $9 and said shoulder or projection is preferably in the form of a sleeve or collar secured in any desired manner to the piston red.

Supported by one extremity of the arm or member 61 is a suitable valve 63 adapted to engage and close the end of the supply pipe 59 and connected to the free extremity of the arm or member 61 is a float 64. The arm or member 61 is located at a suitable point above the bottom of the tank to permit a free movement of said arm and the float 64 is so arranged with relation to the valve 63 that when a suflicient quantity of liquid is in the tank 60, the float will be raised by the liquid to hold the valve 63 normally open, but when the supply decreases or reaches a certain amount, the float 64 will be lowered and the weight thereof upon the free extremity of the arm or member 61 will seat the valve 63 to close the end of the supply pipe 59. Leading from the cylinder 42, preferably at a point above the piston 41 is a discharge pipe 65. Assuming the tank 60 to contain anadequate supply of liquid, the float 64 will unseat the valve 63. With the parts in this position, the pump is operated in the same manner as set forth in the applications above referred to. Briefly stated, the operation of this portion of the pump is as follows: When the dial or indicator 21 has been set so that the pump will discharge a predetermined amount and the clutch member 33 has been locked out of operative position so as to join the sections12 and 13 of the operating shaft motion being applied to this shaft through the medium of a pulley 15, the pinion gear 16 will be rotated, which latter will transmit motion to the gear 17 and through the medium of the member 23,pawls 24 and 26, the dial or indicator 21 will be intermittently rotated until the projection 29 engages and rocks the dog or pawl 30 to release the bar or member 39, which will permit the yielding member 38 to move the clutch operating member 33 into its operating position to unlock the sections 12 and 13 of the shaft. During this operation the piston 48 in the cylinder 46 will be held by means of the yielding member or spring 58 in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,"that is, in a position above the bottom of the cylinder 46 so that the shoulder or projection 52 will be spaced above the upper extremity of the tubular member 51, and said yielding member 58 is of such a tension as to hold the piston in this position against the suction ordinarily created by the piston 41 in the cylinder 42 when the piston is operating, that is, the

In a device of the character described, the combination of a pump provided .with an inlet in communication with a source of fluid supply, means for operating the pump, positive means for throwing the pump out of operation, additional means influenced by the fluid for controlling said supply inlet and means controlled by the last said means for throwing the pump out of operation.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a tank for containing a supply of liquid, a pump provided vith an inlet having communication with the tank, means for operating the pump, a valve for controlling the inlet, a float within the tank, an operativeconnection between the float and valve whereby the valve will close the inlet when the liquid in the tank reaches 'a predetermined level, and means controlled by the act-ion of the pump when the valve is closed for automatically throwing said pump out of operation.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a tank for containing a supply of liquid, a pump provided with an inlet having communication with the tank, means for operating the pump, positive means for throwing the pump out of operation, a valve for controlling the inlet, a float Within the tank, an operative connection between the float and valve whereby the valve will close the inlet when the liquid in the tank reaches a predetermined level, and means controlled bythe action of the pump when the valve is closed for automatically throwing said pumpout of operation.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pump provided with a supply inlet, means for operating the pump, a counterbalanced member, means whereby the operation of the pump will influence the counterbalanced member to move the same, and means operatively related to the said member whereby the movement of the member under the influence of the pump will throw the pump out of operation.-
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pump provided with a supply inlet, means for operating the pump, a counterbalanced member, means influenced by the height of the fluid adjacent the inlet whereby the operation of the pump will noaapaa influence the counterbalanced member to move the same, and means operatively related to the said member whereby the movement of the member under the influence of the pump will throw the pump out of op- 7 eration.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pump provided with a supply inlet, means for operating the pump,

a valve for closing the inlet, a chamber hav- 35 ing communication with the pump, a member movable in the chamber, means influenced by the height of the liquid adjacent the inlet to close the valve whereby the action of the pump when the valve is no closed will move the said member in the chamber, and means influenced by the movement of said. member for throwing the pump out of operation.
11. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a pump provided with a supply inlet, means for operating the pump, a cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder, means for counterbalancing said piston, said cylinder having communication with the pump, means influenced by the height of the liquid adjacent the inlet for closing the inlet to cause the pump to move the piston in the cylinder and means operatively connected to the piston for throwing the pump out of operation when the said piston is moved under the influence of the pump.
12. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a pump including a cylinder having a supply inlet, and a piston movable in the cylinder, means for operating the piston, a valve for closing the inlet when the liquid adjacent said inlet has reached a predetermined level, a chamber,
a piston movable in said chamber, a yielding member for moving the piston in one direction, said chamber having communication with the pump cylinder whereby the movement of the pump piston will exhaust the fluid from the chamber when the inlet of the pump cylinder is closed to move the piston in the chamber against the tension of the yielding member, and means operatively related to said piston for throwmovable tin the cylinder, means for operat- :uoeaosa a ing the piston, a valve for closing the inlet when the liquid adjacent said inlet has reached a predetermined level, a chamber, a piston movable in said chamber, a yielding member for moving the piston in one direction, said chamber having communication with the pump cylinder whereby the movement of the pump piston will exhaust the fluid from the chamber when the inlet of the pump cylinder is closed to move the piston in the chamber against the tension of the yielding member, means for limiting the movement of the last said piston in one direction, and means operatively related to said piston for throwing the pump piston out of operation.
14:. The combination of a pump embodying a liquid extracting means, means for controlling the operation of said liquid extracting means, and means independent of said controlling means whereby the said controlling means are directly actuated by the extracting means to stop the operation of said extracting means when the liquid adjacent the inlet of the pump reaches a predetermined level.
15. The combination of a pump embodying a liquid extracting means, fluid actuated means for controlling the operation of said liquid extracting means, fluid controlled means, and mechanism whereby the second recited means will be directly actuated by the fluid extracting means to stop the operation of said extracting means when the liquid adjacent the inlet of, the pump reaches a predetermined level.
16. The combination of a pump embodying a liquid extracting means, and means actuated by a fluid other than, the fluid which is extracted, means whereby the'last said means will be directly actuated by the said fluid extracting means to stop the operation of said extracting means when the liquid adjacent the inlet of the pump reaches a predetermined level.
17. The combination of a pump embodying a liquid extracting means, means adapted to be actuated by the said extracting means for controlling the o eration of the liquid extracting means, an means whereby the said controlling means will be actuated to directly stop the operation of the said extracting means when the liquid adjacent the inlet of the pumpreaches a predetermined level.
18. The combination of a pump embodying aliquid extracting means, fluid actuated means for controlling the operation of the liquid extracting means, and means controlled by the liquid whereby the first controlling means Will be directly actuated upon by the extracting means to stop the operation of said extracting means when the liquid adjacent the inlet of the pump reaches a predetermined level.
19. The combination of a pump embodying a liquid extracting means, means for controlling the operation of the said liquid extracting means, and means directly operated upon by the said extracting means whereby the second recited means are directly actuated to stop the operation of said extracting means when the liquid adjacent the inlet of the pump reaches a predetermined level.
