Specification of 'Letters Patent.

l`.Aliplnmtitni letl muy. 33, 1863. Serial No. lll.'
To all Iwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER Cooree Huyvrrr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York. county of New .Yorin State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Operation of Translating Devices with MultipleElecti-odes, of-
which the following is a specification. C
,It is well understood that When electric current traverses a divided circuit rcontain?k ing only ohnuc resistance, the product of the ing, as, for example, in the gas or vaporelectric apparatus patented to me in certain of its ex'nbodiments September 17, 1901, or such that the resistance decreases more or less rapidly with increments of current, as in the Well-known Nernst lamp. Under such circumstances, it is practically impossible to so construct the similar translating or transmitting devices as to get an exactly equal loss of voltage in tWo parallel paths including such devices, the consequence being that all the current will flow through one to the exclusion of the'othcr, unless special ballast devices are provided.
The solution of the problem which de pends upon introducing ohrnic resistance or` other choking devices into one orboth of the parallel circuits is open to objection on ziccount of the loss of efficiency in the system due to the presence of such devices. By providing means, therefore, for exactly balancing the electro-motive-forces inthe two paths Without substantial loss of energy, or
interference with the regulation or the supply of energy in the system, a substantial improvement in the arc is accomplished.
It is the object of the present invention to supply such means. Broadly, this result is accomplished by introducing into each of the parallel paths means whereby a loW ofi current in this path produces an electroinotive-force in the opposite path in such a direction as to assist the flow of current in such opposite path. In this way, if the elec-l tro-inotlveforces consumedin theltwo paths lie-slightly unequal, due to unavoidable lack i, 'of similarity in the translating or transmiti ting devices, the slight increase (if-current in one path `will causen slight additional elec- `tro-motive-t'orce in the second path sutiicient yto exactly balance the'diierence in the two electro-motive-v torces. ln. any the losses are only thosey due to the olimic r'- slight hysteresis losses in the iron which may be vreduced by appropriate design to :ruegligihle amount.
lt should be noted that in normal operation it may be expected that at times current Will tend to excess in one of the two or more parallel circuits, in which case an electro-n1otive-orce will be generated vin the other tendingy to equalize the dov?. This may continue for some time. Ultimately, however, it may be that current will tend to excess in the other circuit and when this occurs through my invention anelectro-motivetending in its turn to equalize the How.
For the purpose of illustration, l hausse lected `as the devices which it is desired to,
rent llow in one direction only.

l and 2 are the mains of a supply system, the source being any suitable source of alternating currents. The main conductors 'of the receiving circuit are shown at 3 andt and translating devices requiring direct current appear at 5, 5. Any suitable direct current translating devices may be placed in the receiving circuit; or these devices may he omitted;
BetweenA the mains `l and 3, l introduce two parallel `circuits, 4.0 and 60, which it is desired to operate in parallel. These cir cuits are here represented as being included in a device of the type of my gas or vapor electric apparatus, consisting of a suitable Vtontainer inclosing a conducting gas or vapon and provided with a plurality of posi- "tive electrode 13 and 14 and a negative electrode 9. Devices of this character have the property of permitting current iioW in sistan'ce of the windings and the possible run in parallel circuits the gas or va-por elec?,k trical devices above referred to. y Forspecial" illustration l have chosen vapor 'convertersvr which have the quality of permitting cur-` titl force will be generated in the original-circuit The details of my invention will be underlili une @erection only, *31e elireelifni in the pref inennee lieiirig limited arrows.
