ALFRED CLARK, OF EAST CORINTH, MAINE.
CHUBN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 28, 1912. Serial No. 706,431.
Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
' To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Corinth, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented new and useconsisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed. l
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 Iis 'a side elevation of a churn operating mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a/-a of Fi 1.
In accordance with my invention, the base frame 1 of a spring rockin chair 2, which base frame comprises a pair of supporting bars 3 and a pair of connecting bars 4, is provided with a pair of bars 5 which extend 'under and connect the .bars 3 and project from one side of the frame, the projecting ends .of the bars 5 being provided with standards 6 having bearings 7 in which are mounted the journals 8-9 ofthe body 10 of a churn, which churn body is here shown as barrel-shaped and is adapted to be revolved. The journal 9 is provided with` a ratchet wheel 11 that is fast thereto and is also provided with a pair of oscillating arms 12-13 which are. pivotally mounted on the journal 9, on opposite sides of the ratchet wheel, the arm 12 extending upwardly and the arm 13 extending downwardly. The arm 12 is provided with a pivotally mounted gravit acting pawl which engages the teeth on t e u per side of the ratchet wheel. The arm 13 1s provided with a pivotally mounted pawl 15 which is held in engagement with the teeth on the lower side of the ratchet wheel by means of a spring 16.
Oneof the rockers 17 of the rocking chair is provided with a pair of connecting rods 18-19. lThe rod 18 is ivotally connected to the said rocker near tlie front end of the latter and is `also pivotally connected to the lower end of the arm 13. The rod 19 is pivotally connected to the said rocker near the rear end of thc latter and is also pivotally connected to the upper end of the arm 12.
The usual springs 20 are employed which connect the central portions of the rockers with thevcorresponding portions of the bars 3 of the base frame 1.
Whenthe chair is rocked, the rods 18--19 cause the arms 12-13 to be oscillated and to move simultaneously in the same direction, l
so that while the pawl 14 moves rearwardly on the upper side of the ratchet wheel and turns the latter the pawl 15 will slip on the under side of the ratchet wheel, and in the reverse movement of the said arms 12-13, the pawl 15 by engagement with the lower side of the ratchet wheel will turn the latter while the'pawl 14 slips on the upper side thereof. Hence, the ratchet wheel is rotated in one direction and causes the churn body to correspondingly rotate.
Within the scope of my invention, modifications may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts and the churn operating mechanism may be arranged for operating a churn of any kind.
I claim A churn operating mechanism comprising a shaft mounted for rotation,4 a ratchet Wheel fas't on said shaft, rocking arms pivotally mounted on said shaft, arranged respectively on opposite sides of the ratchet wheel and provided with pawls to engage opposite sides of the ratchet wheel, in comblnation with a chair rocker, a support therefor, and rods connecting the chair rocker of the respective rocking arms.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
ALFRED CLARK.
Witnesses;
